I have been in process control for 32 years. I have lived the huge regulations that have been imposed on the chemical industry from the 90's on. It is mind boggling to me that these companies would be able to operate irresponsibly in this day and age.
The safety record of the company and this rig in particular were amoung the worst in the industry and guess what else has just surfaced???????????

It was announced yesterday the head of the federal board,Mineral/?? board that oversees the industry has been fired........Seems fed regualtions say these rigs are supposed to be inspected every 4 months to see they are operating within federal guidelines.......guess what???? the last inspection on record for this rig was in 2007 and it was an incomplete inspection!!!!!!!!!!!! Seems our own federal agencys can't do their job either. These companies knowing how incompetent the feds are do whatever they want to do,as in cut corners and safety violations up the wazooo.......

It was the "perfect storm", all the pieces fell in place in the exact order and now we have a large mess on our hands......

I haven't watched 60 minutes in 15-20 yrs. I'm surprised they are still on the air. They were caught in outright lies and blatently missleading and twisting stories more than once. Remember the using accelerants to get a Chevy trucks fuel tank to burn. Why should we believe media hype?
I remember as a kid all the family watching 60 Minutes together every week, as Dan Rather was "the man",I haven't watched it in years,as far as I'm concerned, they have NO credibility with me........

There was some lawyer for one or more of the workers on the rig who said that the surviving workers were told by TransOcean that they had to sign a statement saying that they didn't see any problems or they would not be allowed to go home.
I don't know if it is true or not, but I could imagine that a bunch of people who were exhausted and probably still frightened might not have the good sense to tell a company flunky to pound sand or get slapped with a kidnapping lawsuit.

Oddly enough, a friend of mine down in that area told me that everybody down there is talking about it. It is barely even a topic anyplace up here that I have been to.

That story was out the day after the blowout, take it with a grain of salt, not taking up for TransOcean in any way/shape/form, but there are a lot of "stories" going around "leaked out" by lawyers......You can just now get a cabin/hotel room down near the spill, they have been booked up since the day after the spill by attorneys from all over the USA!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that they have all the commercial fishermen "signed up" for a class action lawsuit, the're soliciting sport fishermen who sometimes fish the area for another class action suit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Myself and 6 to 8 buddies fish out of Venice 3 to 5 times a year, we have been contacted to join in the sport fishermen suit, I'm guessing they got that info from the place we always stay at, been staying at the same place for almost 10 years now!!!!!!!!!!!

David,
I'm not really the trusting sort - I'm usually pretty wary in general, but lawyers, politicians, and company spokesmen usually get an extra dose of general distrust from me just on principle.
I see plenty of lawyers trying to win clients/cases by blabbing to anybody who will listen. It's really kind of sad.

Well they finally released a live feed of the oil leaking and it has really had a huge amount of hits. Also they had to admit that it has leaked a lot more than they said it had.

I am not sure if I agree with this or not. I think BP should have to pay ALL of the expenses and clean up that mess in the Gulf, not the taxpayers which will happen if the Govt. pushes BP out and takes over. ( Not a Political post, I hope).

Getting close...certainly begs political responses.

I try to stay away from the political line.

I agree that the US should not foot the bill, but the rig company should share a portion with BP. The question comes in how do you enforce it? The only thing I can think of is to go in and ensure it is cleaned, then go after the companies. Problem is if you start down that road, they will see it is in their best interests to not clean it up since we are going after them anyway. That will put us back to the US doing the clean up. This really is a no win situation, and I am beginning to think that the best course is just to get it cleaned and don't worry about "going after" anyone. But I don't know anything about the oil industry so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

The folks at Woods Hole had recently done some studies on a spill that happened in Buzzards Bay, MA back in 1969. They pulled samples 6-8 inches down and found that it still smells like the diesel fuel that was spilled 40 years ago, and they have noticed different behaviours from things like fiddler crabs when they burrow to the layer where the fuel is.
So even a 'clean-up' done by BP, Transocean, or the US Govt probably does not mean that everything will be back to normal. And that will most likely still mean lots of lawsuits from lots of aggrieved parties, real, imagined, and everything in between.

Ok, I will try to watch my posts more closely in the future. Wasn't meant to start anything political.

Our government already is working on the situation. Yes, BP won't have to pay for it.
