Default Loud Neighbors and not in a good way

Hi,

Anyone have any suggestions for this one....

A few months ago new neighbors moved in next door with teenage kids. Apparently the parents are going through a divorce and the mother is very angry or appears that way. She is rarely home so the kids have the run of the house.

They have frequent parties with underage drinking loud music to all hours. About 2 weeks ago I called the cops at 1am to break things up. Well tonight it is starting up again.

We don't have an association and I don't feel like getting into a situation with a bunch of drunk kids.

Other than calling the police are there any other options. The mother is useless! I tried reaching out to my police department last week but didn't hear back. I was trying to be more proactive but it looks like tonight I will have to be reactive.

And they leave their barking dogs out just about 24-7.

Thanks

Police are really the only option you have.

Trying to do anything yourself will probably not get you the results you would want.

Cops all the way. Don't be afraid to call them repeatedly. They will get frustrated after awhile and take it out on the mother and kids. You will get the results you want.

You might want to find a safe place to keep your Cobra until you get this all worked out.
Drunken teenagers have a bad habit of taking revenge on people that call the cops on them.
Whatever you do, do not take things into your own hands no matter how pissed you get. All they have to do is claim you said something inappropriate and you will end up in serious trouble.

Spot on advice guys. We had a little rain last night so that kept all of the trouble in the house instead of outside.

It amazes me how parents can just give up and let kids do whatever they want.

I live in a small, rural town that is generally quiet except for the thumping bass from an occasional passing car. But, a business owner about 400 feet from me started renting an open room in his building for "private parties." About once a month, I'd start to hear the deep thump of the bass line from a hiphop song I didn't know shaking the walls of my home. It would usually start at about 8 PM and go to as late as 3 AM. I tried visiting the owner once, and then started calling the police when I was awakened at 1 AM. I discovered that it usually took about 20 minutes for the police to arrive, and the volume was only turned down for a minute or two on the first visit. It would take another 20 minutes after my second call, so I'd be wide awake for an hour or more in the middle of the night before things would quiet down.

I went to city hall and read up on the noise ordinance. It turns out they were clearly in violation and could be fined on a scale that escalates after each violation. I told the police chief that rather than telling the offenders to turn down the volume each time, I would like to see them receive a ticket that would cost the owner money. I figured the owner would police the parties better if he knew it was going to cost him money. I also started calling in my complaints well before bedtime so the police would have time to quiet things down before I went to sleep.

My advice to you is to complain to police early and often. Make it clear to them that quieting a loud party is not the goal. Your goal is for the party to not get loud enough to call police in the first place. Also, unless you are the only neighbor to the loud folks, they will not know who complained unless you or the police tell them.

Your neighbor is taking on the serious liability of underage drinking. They will be directly liable for allowing it and any consequences of that activity. To make sure they understand this and that it is on record, have the police contact the parents and notify them that the police have the underage drinking on record and the parents have been warned. They are now on record for any future instances, with no excuse to say they didn't know. They will be liable for future outcomes. It may not work, but if they have any sense, it might sink in and cause them to take some responsibility.

Here is a plan: (Joke) get an automatic weapon, plenty of ammo and pretent your a Navy Seal, crash the party, shoot away and then burn the house down.
Hmmm!, really bad idea but you might feel good for about 3 minutes, so don't do it, I'm joking.

Follow the advice of others with good judgement. attempt to work it out with the mom and kids, document everything, find out what the city rules are, get the police to enforce the law.
One thing don't get mad and fight with the kids..they will do something very creative like toss 100 beer cans in your yard, take out the mail box, or out water in your gas tank.
(Maybe you can convince them to leave you a couple of cases of beer for a party favor).

Good luck with the momless kids

Call the Bridgewater police dept and explain that another underage drinking party is going on at your neighbors house. They take that type of thing quite seriously these days as your call gets taped (digital these days) and it puts the liability of them if someone was to get into an accident after leaving the home and driving drunk. The life you save might be that of a friend or family member.

Jams,

You might also call the animal Control about the dogs. We had a similar situation here a year or so ago and the police wouldn't do anything but the darn dogs barked day and night so we started calling Animal Control. They came to get the dogs, the people was going to fight them, and then the police got involved ion a big way. We also have a noise ordinance here but they refuse to enforce it for some reason. And you could hear their thumping Bass for a mile. Anyway after the Animal Control got involved and they threatened them, that bunch was gone in about 3 weeks and I have never heard of them again. Ah! the peace and quite.

A new way to attack the problem...

Child Social Services... It seems to me it's painfully evident that the proper "parenting" is not happening and the children are suffering for it. Social Services sometimes has more "teeth" than the police do.

I smelt pot the other night so I called our hard working police dept again. They came pretty quick and surprised them in the backyard but failed to catch them in the act of smoking. I chatted with the officers afterwords and they were very supportive and said call anytime.

It is nice to live in a community where officers are supportive and responsive to such issues.

Hopefully my neighbors are starting to get the picture. Next stop videotaping.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Jams, great job chatting it up with the local police. They now know you and see that you are not some nut case. You never know when that will come in handy both in this situation, but also if you run into them in any other situation.

I was going to suggest videotaping and saw it in your post above. A picture is worth a thousand words, video is worth a whole lot more. That's why police cruisers usually have video rolling at all times - cheap insurance in court. Video doesn't lie - unless edited.
