Be very glad you followed your instincts - that job would have been nothing
but trouble for you. The tear down/inspection $$ flat fee might be a good
shop charge to use at your discretion - at least you won't be wasting your time.
Don't blow up at the guy. Maybe he just didn't have the cash. Stay in contact with him. He'll throw it back together and it'll blow even worse next time. Then maybe you'll have a new customer. Just tryin' to look on the bright side.
I should point out that, aside from Chas, Peaks AND Patrick being right, having a customer who is a dumbazz is just as bad as having one who is JUST an azz. Maybe worse............I dunno?
Honestly it happens everywhere.Part of the reason why I stopped working on other peoples engines and trans. The last Harley motor I did the guy says take my time over the winter, problem was we had a very early spring, and a busy one for me.This guy decides he needed his motor asap and drove me nuts, after getting it to him he complained.Hang in there you are not alone.

I have had a horrible couple of months and was really starting to feel sorry for my self. I was reminded of a similar day when I was visiting a hospital for work and a mother came out crying with her child wearing a surgical mask, obviously just finished some sort of cancer treatment. Suddenly life was not so terrible after all. Keep it in perspective Brent, being able to live with your consious is worth a great deal, you will will be rewarded with good karma.
You drive line guy's always have you necks stuck out. your rep is always on the line if somthing goes wrong the guy with the big foot is going to point his crooked finger your way.
Don't discount your ideals or labor. The best work doesn't come cheap, we all like to eat steak just don't settle for beans and franks.
Brent, just remember the conversation between the Dalai Lama and Carl Spackler, Bill Murray's character, in Caddyshack:
Carl Spackler (Bill Murray's character): "A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice."
So, Brent, Gunga galunga.
While there won't be any money from this guy, when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So you've definitely got that going for you.

I think we should all send Brent a C-Note just for being him. And btw, I told my secretary not to tickle him today, which is the every other Friday mark for his "I'm Getting Back in the Game" thread. That's pretty nice of me, if I do say so myself.

Hey Brent I appreciate your customer service and being a friend while doing it. You sent me the McLeod clutch and Ram 20 lb wheel all balanced and indexed with special pilot puller tool and even some aluminum rod stock. I admit I can be a little pressing and demanding because of duty matters and the fact I have to reach back for most everything on this car. I do not get much time to work and when I do, all parts and tools have to be on the bench ready to install. You pick up the phone and answer the emails and have even returned calls on my cell over here. Frankly, I could not have gotten this far without your help. You were even nice yesterday when I broke the grade 8 bolt off in the flywheel because of the locking feature on my German made Torque wrench I did not know about. I knew something was not right I even reset the wrench, but I heard a click alright. That Ram wheel is tough and the rest of the bolt came right out with a prick punch without damaging the threads .
Again you listened to me moan and where darn right pleasant about it. I am over 3000 mile away and you treat me as I walked in your shop.

Mark, that was a good post. We do tend to get all wrapped up in ourselves from time to time. There's always someone out there that has it worse than us.

I can understand the need to vent
blykins, after reading your post I can see why you needed to vent and can understand that need. That said, what happened was probably in your best interest and your actions have in my mind shown what typifies an exemplary ethical enterprise supported by a best business practice attitude. I only wish there were more people and companies that practiced such type of business responsibility and honesty that you have displayed. tin-man
I left this up in All Cobra Talk for a few days, but it's time to move it where it belongs.
Brent...same thing with clients. Folks just want to ask a "few questions" which turns into a couple of hours, and then decide to try to handle it themselves.
Luckily, my workload is such that I'm able to politely tell them to go fish when they come back after screwing things up.
As I've said often...dumbasses should lose a bit of gravity every time they do something stupid. Let the jet stream carry them away...
No big deal at all. Like I said, I left it where it was for a few days due to the subject. Anybody in business (doesn't matter what kind) has run into situations like that.
