After being a professor for a number of years, this topic has a different meaning to me than maybe you.

Before you think the question is dumb, think of the possibility that you did not make it clear enough such that the question was asked.

So, the worse question comes at the wrong time as, "Are you sure I can't get pregnant with this?"

Dumb relates to, "Is it real?"

And most damaging, "Honey, does this dress make me look fat?"

On a cruise ship I encountered a woman looking pretty lost and stopped to see if I could be of assistance. She WAS lost but I soon figured out why. Her question to me was, "Can you please tell me if these stairs go up or down?" Took me a second to process this, but politely told her, From here they go up, but feel free to use them the other way when you get to the top.
Other questions heard on my first and last cruise.
Does this elevator go to the front of the boat?
Does this ship generate its own electricity?
Does the crew sleep on board?
