That is only part of it. These are shark fins drying on rooftops. There is no way Mother Nature can keep up at this pace:

It's predictable and unstoppable. Water, food, fish, oil, you name it. It will all be consumed at an exponential rate. You can't avoid it if the population doubles every 40 years and the population's consumption also accelerates as 3rd world countries become first-world countries.

Think of bacteria growing in a petri dish. That's us on this planet. No one is willing to do anything about it. All the environmental laws are pissing in the wind. They can't keep up with the population growth.

Nature has a way of rebalancing its self over the millenniums, wonder where we fit into that process. George

Yup. the time will come where we can no longer sustain ourselves, then we will die off, at least to a much smaller group. Only then the earth might have a chance.
My vote is for asteroid to hit and end it all for all of us. Or a volcano, a much slower way to go, but the end result is the same. That would be the simplest solutions.
I think the time is sooner than we'd like to beleive.

It's interesting how we resist change even though we know we have to do something. Even though we know disaster is ahead, nothing will be done until there is no choice.

Churchill regretted that the Allies had many opportunities to prevent WWII, but they just didn't want to deal with it. They buried their heads in the sand and hoped it would go away even though it was obvious that it would not. 40 million+ lives later, it worked out ok.

Kind of reminds you of the movie The Day The Earth Stood Still.

The problem with every solution is the fact that somebody will ignore it and do whatever they want due to greed or poverty. At the rate we are going 30-50% of all animals face extinction in the next 35 or so years. Everybody will complain, some will try to stop it, but a few will finish all them off.

We will leave facebook and Lizard Lick Towing.

Actually, after a few million years, all of the plastic will get crushed under millions of pounds of pressure and turn into.... oil!

The cycle starts again.

Our human existence may be unsustainable, but the Earth has seen worse and rebounded as noted in a previous post. The cycle will continue until our star dies... And if there was a Singularity, there may be again...rinse and repeat...
