Default Title Help (Cobra registered as 97) no emissions

I bought a 66 Classic Roadster (1997 kit ) from a friend several years ago. The car was registered as a 1997 in Texas before I got it . Unfortunately with out emissions, the car will not pass inspection. I have had a blast with the car for the last 10 years or so, and have never worried about an inspection sticker, but the laws are changing here in Texas and in March you won't be able to get a registration with out an inspection. Once the vin is registered in Texas, it will always show up as a 97 here. If someone has an idea of how I can get it register as a 66, please let me know. If not I guess I will have to go with an LS motor, on the next engine. Thanks!

Question

Does Texas have anything like California does that will let you pay a ton of money and get your Cobra registration changed. Everything we have here has to be under the SB-100 bill, but they added an addendum to that as people who bought cars from out of state or that were registered wrong couldn't register them under SB-100. I believe it is SB-1578 that uses the same 500 numbers that SB-100 does and by jumping through the hoops and paying a lot of money you can get your title under the SB-100 which will show the year that you got the car but it is still smog exempt per the Special construction number.

check here

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...83339334,d.cGU

and read page 4-3 and 4-4 I think the answer "may" be to apply for a custom vehicle plate. not sure if it'll work or if it's answer. but I think its worth looking at

In Ohio. you can get a Collector Plate. That exempts you from emissions. The stipulation is you have to spend $5000 in "improvements" before you can get the plate. They usually let Cobras to through without a problem.

I wish all these states would get together and come up with some common ground rules concerning home built/kit/etc cars. What a racket!

Joyridin,

I couldn't agree with you more. Every state seems to do this differently and it really makes it hard on anyone that wants to buy a car from out of state.
