Ditto - I've been reading the book A Bridge of Strangers that the recent Tom Hanks movie about the 57 Russian Spy trial movie was adapted from. In reading it I was refreshened as to how the Bill of Rights came to be in the form it did (been out of school for a long time now). Many states refused to ratify the original Constitution until it was amended to include the Bill of Rights and the first 10 amendments. The feared it gave the Federal Government too many centralized power over the states and did not provide sufficiently for the protection of individual freedoms. Only after the Bill of Rights was added in 1791 including the second amendment, did the states ratify the Constitution. Our rights to bear arms is wrapped up in the same package with the right to freedom of speech, the right to a fair trial, search and arrest warrants, the right of assembly, etc. Without the Bill of Rights the US may have never have seen the Constitution ratified by the states and our Nation of Freedom might not exist as it does today. The Bill of Rights are the keystone to our Constitution and the 2nd Amendment as much so as any of the others.

Love this vid - if you stop at 1:11 you can see the rooftop beer garden at the Glenmore - my favourite pub that definitely doesn't serve fosters (met my missus here too).

Anyway, Stop being a d1ck FR. We have fought in nearly every war since Jesus Christ together. Your coming across as the epitome of the "Ugly American".

Fortunately I live in a country where the chance of being a victim of a violent crime such as that is 1/6th of where you live. I don't need a gun, thanks.

You may, you may not. That won't be up to you. And if it does, you'll be waaay behind the curve.

I drive with a spare tire. I don't care if AAA says there's an 80% chance I won't need it. That's just begging Murphy for a kick in the nuts.

I just saw this thread a little while ago. You guys scare me. How many of you have actually come up against a situation where you wished you had your guns with you, or you did have it and you had to pull it out to defend yourself or your family?
Yes I'm Australian, yes I was in the Australian Army Cadet Corps at school and loved going to the range and shooting 303s, SLRs, Brens and Stens, and yes I grew up on the land and my dad had two shotguns and a rifle. I don't own a gun, and I have never come across a situation where I feared for my safety and would have felt better with a gun in hand. OK, some might say I should get out more; some might say "you live in sleepy old Adelaide", but you guys sound as if you're scared of your own shadows. I'm generalising a little there, but you do scare me.

Olddog, guns "are designed to accurately propel a projectile at high velocities" ....what, designed with no actual purpose in mind?

Over and out,

Interesting discussion...let it go for a few days but now it seems the arguments are in a loop. No politics in the Lounge or anywhere else...been the rule for years now. Tensions rise and folks start calling other folks dicks (damn close to been shut out by the way).
