Actually in a way it does correlate. The more advancements that are made in any automotive area, provide new ideas for the other area. 4cyl/6cyl/V8/modular/ecoboost, etc. Even though I am old school on hot rods, I can really appreciate the technical advancements.
The aim is to reduce friction on the major thrust side.
The decrease on the major side is larger than the increase on the minor side.
Hence better fuel economy, more torque etc.
Have seen this done as offset bores, but not as large as 10mm for obvious reasons.
I seem to remember someone's engine years ago that had the bores at less than a 90 degree angle to the crank. I assume to accomplish the same effect via a different model.
