Default Handmade or mass market

I have been considering lately the distinction between crafted items and broad-market goods. Last year, I purchased an inexpensive belt from a large retailer because I required something promptly, and it seemed acceptable initially. However, after several months, it began splitting, and the clasp became slack. It prompted me to question if upfront cost savings truly make sense. Conversely, handcrafted objects frequently carry a higher price, and at times you aren't entirely certain if the standard will equal the expense. Thus, I am currently positioned between these pair of choices. How do you generally determine what merits purchasing handmade versus what is acceptable to acquire mass-produced?
