Wake up at 10am
Breakfast 10:15
Tv watching and short nap
Lunch 12 noon to 1 pm while watching Las Vegas
1 pm to 3 PM, wash clothes, read paper and get e-mail
Still have to read all new CC threads, eat supper, watch TV and finish the rest of the paper.

Boy, I'm getting tired just thinking about all the work I've done today. Its up to 43 F now, but we are supposed to get a few inches of snow tonight.

Actually that isn't quite accurate. I vote to get him back on in all polls and twice in two of them. Now I get compared to a FRENCH FROG with the morals of a Turtle. :LOL:

Got the first amount of measurable snow in Feb last night. About one inch. More on the way with forecast of 2 to 5 inches. :CRY::CRY::CRY: I might as well take vacations in Michigan. :CRY::CRY::CRY:

To tell you the truth I am not sure I would know what to do with a large animal killed during a hunt. I certainly do not know how to field dress one. Which is really dumb as my Dad was a big game hunter all his life.

I would love to go Elk hunting but I am not sure what to do with the kill. Of course I would put it in the freezer i would not kill for sport, I just don't know how to field dress it. I am thinking a butcher would do the cuts right Tru?

Field dressing an animal isn't hard, but now it is environmentally unkind here and you would get fined for doing it. I guess that is why they have just about stopped all hunting in this area, as you sure can't carry a deer or bear 10 miles out of these canyons in a few minutes to get it to a butcher. They used to just leave the uneditable stuff for the coyotes and such. :(

Steve, we process some and we send it out of we do not have time. I got a 5 by 6 bull a few years ago and hung it 14 feet in the air...with it's rear hoofs still onthe ground. To clean it out, I crawled inside and removed what I had to. Then it took four men to put it in the back of my truck.

Steve, If you search for Texas Boar Hunt, you will find the thread of our hunt down in HLC/Fred's back yard. Gerry cook wild Boar backstraps for HLC and her family one night.

Processing is a matter of knowledge and what NOT TO DO. If you are going to hunt for something, take someone that has done it before to know what to do.

So, relative to your post:

1. find you prey.
2. size your prey.
3. license your hunt.
4. hunt.
5. kill.
6. gut your kill.
7. transport your kill to a processor.
8. pack meat in freezer and eat well.

There is no way in hell I would even go hunting with the intent of shooting an animal without someone there to teach / help me with the processing after it was down. No way. As I said I also would not hunt for the pleasure just to kill it. It would be to put in the freezer and eat or I would never shoot it in the first place.

I cannot imagine getting inside the carcase of an animal to clean it out. However I would like to go Elk hunting some day. I hunted every year with my dad when I was a little kid but that was so long ago and when he was cleaning the dear I never really paid much attention as to what he was actually doing.

I remember one year we were out looking for "camp meat" and this little dear walked out in front of us and just froze. Dad said "dammit, it is too close to us" (@ 15' in front of us) he said well I'll clean and kill it at the same time. When he shot it completely gutted the dear and threw it about twenty or thirty feet from where it was standing.

That was a Remington 7MM. I was in awe. I remember there was not much left to clean up though.

Have you ever seen a wild Moose up close. They look as huge as an Elephant and are very nice animals. I used to love the one that they used on the old TV Series, Northern Exposure. Hem was as tall as some of the houses. One would make a great pet. :JEKYLHYDE

Are you still allowed to gut the deer where you kill it there? Here that is a no, no and you can get into trouble for doing it. As I said in the earlier post I think that is why we don't have much hunting here. A few of the people that live back up in the mountains still hunt any time they want as they can't possible cover all these hundreds of square miles of mountains and canyons.

Well, okay...Steve, I have hunted for some time and had shot animals for more than just meat. Wild dogs that have gotten in the horse pasture had to be taken out so the horses would not get injured. Woodchuck that tunnel under big trees had to be taken out as the tree will fall after they are done. Anyway, we hunt for food primarily. It is not too often we eat cow. In general we eat what we hunt, so we place our shots. I am sure your impression of shooting the small deer seemed to leave you with the idea it was blown to pieces, it was just an impression left on you by your father's comment.

Should you decide to do a hunt, please do not hesitate to ask me about it.

Ron, yes moose are large and are considered a big game hunt. I have seen more than one in the wild. I have not hunt for moose...yet. I have to take the hunts within my means. The same is with Gerry, we have been invited to hunt Roosevelt Elk. It is our intention to do that hunt this year.

If I am in the woods and not close to people's houses or buildings, then we, I, "feed the criters" as we say. That means we leave the "gut pile". If not, we bag it and stuff it in the kill until we can dump the bag.

Steve, we size the rifle to the hunt. If we are going to be doing some distance shooting, we like to use hand made ammunition with a hand made rifle. If we are protecting the house, we like a shotgun with a 8.25" barrel and #4 shot, unless we are tight in the house, we change to #6 ( it is all in how the shotgun is loaded ). Anyway, we size the rifle to the hunt.

I hope this fills in the gaps.

Where will you hunt the Elk at? We have some people here that go to Colorado I believe it is but they have to apply early for tags and they have a limit. One of the guys was complaining last year that he didn't get one and couldn't go. Another guy goes almost every year, and he never gets one but his wife always does. Obviously a better shot than he is. But he got even. They had one of the heads with a nice rack of horns mounted to hang on the wall. She works for the school district and while she was at work he decided to surprise her and he hung the head on the wall above her favorite recliner. When she came home, he took her in to show her what he had done and as they walked across the floor the head and everything fell down into the chair. She accused him of doing it on purpose to try and get it to fall on her. :)

We have been busy all weekend!!! whew!!!! I am not marching though. I put my foot down...... ;) :D

The recruiting is pretty heavy. Peter is pretty overwhelmed. He hates to run. He quit being a 'forward' in soccer and became 'keeper' (goalie) so he wouldn't have to run anymore. It looks like all freshmen do is take orders, and run. oh well! Seems like if you can make it thru the freshman year you'll survive. 20% dropout of freshmen! :eek: mostly due to grades, or just can't stand it.
He would LOVE it if he could get through the first year.....
