Damn, long day I'm tired.

see ya tomorrow

Ron61 07-15-2009 06:21 AM

Well another hot morning. It only got to 106 yesterday but is supposed to pass that today and the coming weekend looks to be pretty hot. No wind this morning but it blew all day yesterday and felt like the Santa Anna Winds.

Ron

4RE KLR 07-15-2009 08:49 AM

It was 103* here yesterday and expected to be the same today.

Drink a lot of water Ron.

Thanks Fred,
For the formatting the USB flash drive idea, it worked great and now has all the files on it.

It looks like I will have to buy another laptop.
This one has only 512MB of RAM and I need at least 1GB of RAM to run some new software I need.

Ron,
I looked at upgrading this one to 2MB's of RAM. That is the most the motherboard will support in this PC without having to upgrade that. The problem there is the BIOS will not support 2GB's of RAM so I have to up'date' that as well. Yea, that's easy. The problem then is I have to upgrade the processor because now the BIOS is different and the AMD 64 Athlon won't support the new BIOS, or the 2GB's of RAM. So I have to upgrade that as well.

Then, well it is only an 80GB HD so while I am at it (right) I may as well upgrade that as well. Although I have 50MG's empty now on this system.

Ok, Here is the dilemma. Actually it is a no brain-er, (I think)
It will cost me $320.00 to upgrade and update.

A new Laptop that has 4GB's of RAM, 320GB HD (and everything else I need) is only about $250 more.

So, it looks like I am in the market for an new laptop.

I like HP equipment but they do not want to install Windows XP Pro as the operating software and I HATE VISTA. Did I say that out loud?

Anyway, The new software that I need to run doesn't get along with Vista 64 bit anyway. So I need to find one that is either XP or Vista 32 bit.

And (so far at least) that is like pulling teeth.

Ouch!

Ron61 07-15-2009 09:06 AM

Steve,

I am glad that you got the flash drives to work. It is getting hard to find a computer company that will still install XP, but Dell did it on my laptop. However if I ever decide to get another computer I am going to have it made by one of the local places that I deal with and they will use the cards that I want and build it to my way and load the OS without all of the unneeded crap that the main companies seem to think has to be on the disk. I am tired of spending a day taking off junk that is just for trial. I like the set up I have in this computer as it has two stand alone 500 Gig hard drives, one has the OS and the other I just use to store things on as it is faster than using a CD/DVD. Also a high end video card and lots of RAM.
You might check with one of your local computer places and they may custom build you one for what you want for about what the new one would cost. I think that with all of the upgrades that you listed and the cost, I would just pay the extra for a new one that already has the bugs out of it. Or is supposed to have them out.

Ron :)

392cobra 07-15-2009 09:54 AM

Tru,
When you get that Boar's Head munted be sure and post some pictures.

Steve,
I felt pretty confident about formating the drive....I had already stepped in that pile.

Ron,
It is suppose to get to around 104 deg. mid--afternoon with a Heat Advisory. My a/c guy will be here mid-afternoon with the relay that went out yesterday afternoon when it was only 103.

Guess it's time to get naked and lay under the sprinklers in the backyard.
Last time the front yard didn't work out to well.

Ron61 07-15-2009 10:38 AM

:3DSMILE:

Fred,

It is already 101 here and just 9:35. I think the high today is supposed to be around 107 and then on up as the weekend approaches. The low last night was 78. I have the air conditioner set at 72 and it was on and off all night. Many more of these huge rate increases and I will be using a hand held fan.

Don't be a coward. Try the front yard again.

Ron

Steve, Do not go vista 32 bit. It really sucks. I am running 64 bit at home on one PC and it is great. If you have to have 32 bit, get XP. If you need to, buy the PC and get an XP disc and reload it. I will do some looking for a CD and see what I can find if you need me to

Joe Wicked 07-15-2009 11:59 AM

Steve,
I just talked to a guy who just bought a Laptop from HP. He says they offer a package called "Roll Back" or something like that. The package cost $69.00 and allowed him to roll back the Vista to XP. It included all the necessary drivers for XP also. Might be a better option than my previous idea.

trularin 07-15-2009 02:49 PM

Steve, after my last problem with my computer, just buy the dang Intel chip and move on.

Fred, I think I am going to peroxide it tonight. My wife is getting the stuff.

:D :D

NO CHIT....
They told me they would no longer do that. Hell, I want an HP but they told me to go shop at Dell. No Kidding.

I wish it was that simple. I have figured out it is an easy to do change. However that is not all it takes to make this work right.

Then the processor would be too slow, so I need to update that, then I need to update the BIOS, then I'd still have only an 80GB HD.

Now, not that 80GB is not enough, but this Laptop is a bear to get apart and back together again. So while I have it apart I may as well upgrade the HD and the fans and cooling systems. Then I am at the cost of a new one.

The bad part is this system is great, hell I really like this PC, even though it is a few years old.

I need to contact HP again and see what's up.

Vista is out all the way around 32 0r 64. I simply don't like the software

4RE KLR 07-15-2009 05:07 PM

Well..... Ain't that the Chits

I just got off the "live Help" with HP.
They pretty much told me to go piss up a rope and go and buy from Dell.

Amazing customer service with that bunch.

Edit to add:
I contacted them via email and will give them a chance to respond to this mess.
I will post any communication here as to what the response is.

Have you considered an Apple ? Apple will run Windows XP. My boy has it on 2 Apple Laptops and a Apple Imac.

392cobra 07-15-2009 06:12 PM

Mike,
Figure out whether or not you broke the toe ? Not that it matters, still hurts bad either way.

What parts have you decided to replace ?

Ibr8k4vetts 07-15-2009 06:32 PM

Nope, everyone said to go to the Doctor but think they would take a couple of x-rays and say, yep you broke your foot and here's the bill.:JEKYLHYDE
I order a front fender, sideplate, mirror and a turn signal Grand total $211 and change. The rest I will get off E-pay.

No I had not considered Apple. maybe I should.

I "chatted" with Dell, "No problem Sir, how may I help you today" "XP as your Operating system, Yes Sir we can do that, Can I send your new Dell laptop with Windows XP to you today?"

Talk about a difference in night and day as far as customer service.

HP SUCKS at customer service.

However, I will wait for 24 hours to see if they reply to the email. If they don't I will buy a Dell and get rid of every single HP I have. Right now, all of my equipment is HP. That could change in a heartbeat though.

I will not put up with incompetence for one second.

I've broken a number of toes, fingers and ribs.Everytime ,until I caught onto their game,it was "Yep,it's broke.Pay up front". No mas.wrap it and go on.

Getting expensive for 10 mph !

4RE KLR 07-15-2009 06:38 PM

Scroll down and look for yourselves:

XP... No problem.

http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/noteb...45&s=dhs&cs=19

Vista is just junk software and until Microsoft gets rid of it everyone will have the same problems. Geese and HP thinks their sales are down because of the economy.
:LOL::LOL: It's their customer service that is running everyone off.

Ron61 07-16-2009 06:05 AM

Steve,

I have had pretty good customer service with HP but Dell was another story. Once I bought the laptop, it had a strange port on it that wasn't marked and seemed to go nowhere so I called them. This was 2 days after I received the computer. They wanted to charge me for telling me that port does nothing and was just an empty hole. I asked them about what would happen if I needed something that required a tech and was told it would cost by the hour. So it seems to be more a mater of who yo talk t than the whole tech departments, however now if I do have to call I always tell them to just transfer me to a 2nd or 3re level tech as I am pressed for time and don't have an hour to listen to them tell me my browser is the problem. Nearly all of the tech service at the established companies stinks now I think.
