Well their use of English is getting a little better. Darn Jon, from all of these things you get you have access to at least 1/3rd of the worlds wealth. Funny how many people can forget millions of dollars just lying around in banks. Let us know when you get your first big deposit.

I understand they actually hold SEMINARS in Nigeria to educate folks on how to do better scams. No doubt they charge an entry fee. Clearly these scams DO work, it's the 'law of numbers' with any scam (or even sales). Contact enough people and someone will take the bait.

Not me! But it's amazing that some of the people known to fall for the Nigeria scams are well eductated and apparently intelligent folks. Often in a 'high' position within their company.

...heck, that leaves me out.

Ernie,

There is a priest here that used to come to me every day with about 10 of those darn scams wanting to know if he had actually won something or if he should send them his bank account number so they could transfer his money into it. I spent two months trying to convince him that stuff is just scams and even tracked one back to the law firm in London, England and showed him right on their web site they had a big warning about the scam that was going around using their name and letterhead. Also they posted a copy of the phony e-mail, and he still couldn't believe it. He still gets them every day but now he has quit asking me about them. I don't know how many he may have answered, but so far as I know he hasn't lost anything.

Hey, I copy mine from the best. I just don't ask for big pay outs. all I want is for each member of CC to send me $1 dollar. Now is that asking for to much?

Heck, no. Cash or check, Ron? And could you post your home address, zip code and social security number here to make it easier to mail right away today?

Wes,

You forgot to ask for my bank account number so you can just directly deposit the dollar and withdraw the rest.

Some people believe in a benevolent God who will reward them for their lifetime of (choose one or more of the following) good works, hard luck, abiding faith, looking for a demonstration of God's presence. A scam offering free money feels like the reward they have been waiting for. To view it as a scam makes them a skeptic who doubts that heavenly rewards will ever arrive. It's hard to convince an optimist that there's no silver lining around this particular dark cloud.

Tommy,

Unfortunately one of these days he is going to get taken by one of these things. For a priest he seems to lack any logic. I told him over and over that if he had won a lottery they do not notify you by e-mail asking for a set amount to cover the expenses of sending you your money. I tried to convince him that he could not have won any lottery that he never even entered. Then since the Parish has a legal department I told him to refer that stuff to them and he still just can't accept that it is just scams. I gave up after tracing three to Nigeria and one to Korea and showing him the trace route and map.

When logic challenges a deeply held belief system, something's got to give.

Dear Friend,

I will like to invest in your country. I am Kelvin Momougo from Liberia, the son of Jonathan Momougo, former Minister of Mines and Industry. Our bothparents were killed in the Liberia war. My sister and I are now in Accra Ghana-West Africa, to notify claims of the fund. We intend to invest this money abroad, hence my contacting you to advise us how best we can invest this money in your country. For your assistance I offer 20% of the money to you.

Please send your direct phone and fax numbers for more information on your reply.

Thank you very much for the anticipated acceptance while I expect your

Dragon,

Those about winning lotteries that you don't even know about are about 60% of what that priest I was talking about gets. He won one in Ireland and one in some other country that I never heard of on the same day. I think the only scam thing I have ever gotten was a couple from the so called world bank wanting me to update my account and one from e-bay which I have never used.

I've sucked into several rebate scams. I always eventually get them, but I calculate I only make 38 cents an hour for my time. Sooner or later, one won't go through and I'll have a negative balance. And will no longer live as long as I would have. But I'm no quitter.

Default Scam letters

I get these everyday from Nigeria, and the UK wanting me to be involved with money laundering, bank account verification etc

Some from Nigeria have headings "In the name of the Lord" "Dearest" etc, what I do is send about 5000 blind carbon copies back to them, calling them F****ing **hole c***s, my wife hates me doing it, but lately I have been receiving replies, which I thought they couldnt see who it was from when you bcc, golly they might murder me!

I think the FBI and other Gov'ts should take a hard line on these activities, its really not going to affect me that much but it could be someones Mother etc who has good values and a trusting giving nature, and then they loses a lot of money!

Ant,

The BCC is just so others that you send the same e-mail to can't see who else you sent it to. If you don't want them to know it is from you, then make up a phony throw away e-mail name and use that. Once you have sent out your replies, just delete that name. I am sure that you know this but the CC lets all others that you send an e-mail to see who you sent it to. Good to use if you don't want them sending it to each other as they will know who got it.

I haven't gotten a scam email letter for a long time but I never open anything anymore unless I know who it's from or the subject at least makes sense.

On the other hand, as far as scams go, a couple of years ago, I bought some WD-40 and the can advertised 20% more-for-free. I was, of course, thrilled. All this time it's been too tall for my shelf. But I believed in the gift like Ron's Priest.

Just now I went to use it and it's out of air pressure. There's about 20% of liquid left in it.

I think I might be getting nickle-and-dimed for thousands this way.

Default Scam letters

Ron61,

Well that puts a different complexion on my stance of replying to these emails!
I think I will spend that time finishing off my car, and I cant really be bothered doing a fresh email address and then deleting it, but a good idea if you want to do one!

I hope that technology can come in to help with this problem, as these emails consume peoples time daily, and I think the offenders should receive a .45 calibre perforation between the eyes, for ripping off good people!

Ant,

I don't know how your e-mail program works, but it takes me about 45 seconds to build a throw away e-mail and I can have as many as I want. When I am going to be dealing with anyone or place that I don't want having my real e-mail I just use one of those and if they start getting junk I delete them.
