Giving Gore credit by 'contributions' or advocacy is like saying Hanna-Barbera really CREATED the internet due to it's forward thinking video conferencing and communication representations in the Jetsons (remember he sat clicking a button all day) AH HA, George Jetson, the creator of the mouse.

Would Gene Roddenberry have patent/bragging rights when a transporter is developed?

What he really did, or contributed, was advertising at the opportune moment.

He is a salesman, taking credit for other peoples work and packaging it as his own. He is an effective one.

If you are going to base his contribution on his bill in 1991,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Gore's_contributions_to_the_Internet_and_techno logy
people, including me, had been using 'arpanet' which just referred to 'net' with ftp ascii files, email, and TCP/IP protocols in the late 80's. (sounds like the current day internet to me, just a lot... a lot a lot slower)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arpanet
"In 1983, TCP/IP protocols replaced NCP as the principal protocol of the ARPANET, and the ARPANET became just one component of the fledgling Internet."

What many fail to realize, computing power for the consumer would never handle packet switching to make widespread use possible until the 90's anyway. The pieces were all ready in place, technology is was needed to catch up. Egomanical Gore was nothing more than a Egomaniac Mark Cuban, where they are the most fortunate people to be in the most fortunate positions. (Cuban will probably come after me for defamation of character)

Let's say this, his legislation, signed by Bush, allowed a PRIVATELY OWNED corporation out of no where, leap R&D development with huge funding to create Mosaic.

how is the context of a quote like this really defined?

"'If it had been left to private industry, it wouldn't have happened,' Andreessen says of Gore's bill, 'at least, not until years later.'"

sigh, sorry, if this constitutes a hijack, I'm sorry, he just makes my skin crawl.

what a dog and pony show.

BUSH? seriously BUSH, a comparison of Gore! Laughable.

Murder? nope, not the worst or best depending on how you look at it.
Money Waster? nope, not the worst or best depending on how you look at it.
1st (American) Dictator? Not EVEN CLOSE!!! not the worst, or best depending on how you look at it.

Bush really didn't/doesn't excel at anything. Complacency doesn't deserve any award.

Congratulations Mr. Gore. You deserve the prize more than anyone I know.

I can't wait to see you stand shoulder to shoulder with the surviving previous winners.

Quote:
2005
MOHAMED ELBARADEI (joint winner). He's done such a nice job with Iran.

2004
WANGARI MAATHAI. The Kenyan ecologist peacefully teaches that the AIDS virus is a biological agent deliberately created by the Man.

2002
JIMMY CARTER JR., former President of the United States of America. A true cosmopolitan, he has undermined the foreign policy of his own country and vouched for the bona fides of tyrants and murderers all over the world.

2001
UNITED NATIONS, New York, NY, USA.
KOFI ANNAN, United Nations Secretary General. Among other things, they have respectively served as the vehicle for, and presided over, one of the biggest scams in history.

1994
YASSER ARAFAT (joint winner), Chairman of the Executive Committee of the PLO, President of the Palestinian National Authority for his efforts to create peace in the Middle East. He was a a cold-blooded murderer both before and after receiving the award.

1992
RIGOBERTA MENCHU TUM, Guatemala. She is the notorious Guatmalan faker and author, sort of, of I, Rigoberta Menchu.

1988
THE UNITED NATIONS PEACE-KEEPING FORCES New York, NY, U.S.A. Notwithstanding rapes and sex abuse committed by the team in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and the Congo, still doing fine work all over the world.
What a proud group of people and organizations!

I have a hard time ignoring ignobles like ur selfishness. But like you said, ur comment is worth only 2 cents (and at that, bit over priced).

This was in the op-ed section of the Herald this morning ....

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

‘Truth’ emerges in British court

By Boston Herald editorial staff | Saturday, October 13, 2007 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Editorials

So one day a British judge is banning the distribution of Al Gore’s film on global warming from that nation’s schools and days later the former vice president is walking off with the Nobel Peace Prize. Well, sometimes you just can’t keep junk science down.

Yes, the same gaggle of politically correct judges who thought the ever-tedious Jimmy Carter, top ranked terrorist Yasser Arafat and the man who presided over the largest scam in United Nations history (that would be Kofi Annan and the oil-for-food debacle) were worthy of the peace prize have done it again.

Of course, in the co-winner of the prize, the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Nobel panel did indeed find a worthy recipient which has done credible research in the field for decades.

Gore? Well, let’s just look at what British High Court Justice Michael Burton had to say in ruling against the distribution of “An Inconvenient Truth” to 3,500 schools because it violated school laws barring “political indoctrination.”

He called it “a political film” that while “broadly accurate” was truly flawed in its details.

The judge said the evidence was either inadequate to show, or was just not there, that global warming had caused: 1. Hurricane Katrina. 2. Evacuation of low-lying atolls in the Pacific. 3. Snow melting on Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. 4. Drowning of polar bears in the Arctic. 5. Death of coral reefs. 6. A drying of Lake Chad.

Also: 7. A chart purporting to show a lock-step connection between atmospheric carbon dioxide and temperature over 650,000 years “does not establish what Mr. Gore asserts.” 8. A 20-foot rise in sea level, predicted for “the near future,” would take a millennium. And 9. A prediction that the Gulf Stream would shut down was “very unlikely” though it might slow.

The film was, in short, more propaganda than science - something which seemed to not at all bother the Nobel judges.

Yes, but the judge did not say it could not be used, and from what I read, it WILL be shown to all of the kids (with some kind of stupid disclaimer...as if that would somehow right the imbalance).

I'm moving to Fiji.

Mike,
No good argument so you have to resort to insults? He said nothing about you personally, yet you attack him. Personally, I think you owe him an apology.

Throwing in my 2 cents..........

Big bore Gore is better off rubbing shoulders with movie stars and dressing up
During his campaign for the Presidency he tried the Kennedy approach for touch football
Hey in the 60's we b!!tched about global warming but we were just drugged crazed hippys........

I'm glad he has taken off where we left off.......Now I'm free to drive the evil polluting Cobra
To the Earth we are just like fleas on a dogs back, She will shake us off eventually.

We thought we were correct then.......so may be he is....or he could be another crazed idoit as we were then

Besides we can turn off the TV with all it's hype

And we can stay FOREVER YOUNG

Perhaps there were no other candidates, but on the other hand - according to the OpinionJournal:

Not Nobel Winners
Some nominees for next year.

Sunday, October 14, 2007 12:01 a.m. EDT

In Olso Friday, the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was not awarded to the Burmese monks whose defiance against, and brutalization at the hands of, the country's military junta in recent weeks captured the attention of the Free World.

The prize was also not awarded to Morgan Tsvangirai, Arthur Mutambara and other Zimbabwe opposition leaders who were arrested and in some cases beaten by police earlier this year while protesting peacefully against dictator Robert Mugabe.

Or to Father Nguyen Van Ly, a Catholic priest in Vietnam arrested this year and sentenced to eight years in prison for helping the pro-democracy group Block 8406.

Or to Wajeha al-Huwaider and Fawzia al-Uyyouni, co-founders of the League of Demanders of Women's Right to Drive Cars in Saudi Arabia, who are waging a modest struggle with grand ambitions to secure basic rights for women in that Muslim country.

Or to Colombian President Ālvaro Uribe, who has fought tirelessly to end the violence wrought by left-wing terrorists and drug lords in his country.

Or to Garry Kasparov and the several hundred Russians who were arrested in April, and are continually harassed, for resisting President Vladimir Putin's slide toward authoritarian rule.

Or to the people of Iraq, who bravely work to rebuild and reunite their country amid constant threats to themselves and their families from terrorists who deliberately target civilians.

Or to Presidents Viktor Yushchenko and Mikheil Saakashvili who, despite the efforts of the Kremlin to undermine their young states, stayed true to the spirit of the peaceful "color" revolutions they led in Ukraine and Georgia and showed that democracy can put down deep roots in Russia's backyard.

Or to Britain's Tony Blair, Ireland's Bertie Ahern and the voters of Northern Ireland, who in March were able to set aside decades of hatred to establish joint Catholic-Protestant rule in Northern Ireland.

Or to thousands of Chinese bloggers who run the risk of arrest by trying to bring uncensored information to their countrymen.

Or to scholar and activist Saad Eddin Ibrahim, jailed presidential candidate Ayman Nour and other democracy campaigners in Egypt.

Or, posthumously, to lawmakers Walid Eido, Pierre Gemayel, Antoine Ghanem, Rafik Hariri, George Hawi and Gibran Tueni; journalist Samir Kassir; and other Lebanese citizens who've been assassinated since 2005 for their efforts to free their country from Syrian control.

Or to the Reverend Phillip Buck; Pastor Chun Ki Won and his organization, Durihana; Tim Peters and his Helping Hands Korea; and Liberty in North Korea, who help North Korean refugees escape to safety in free nations.

These men and women put their own lives and livelihoods at risk by working to rid the world of violence and oppression. Let us hope they survive the coming year so that the Nobel Prize Committee might consider them for the 2008 award.

Since they've gon from peace to political - will the Hilderbeast to next?

Good article, but I thought the Nobel could be awarded posthumously?

...

I suppose this is just one more of those embarassing things that Americans will have to get over.

Considering that G.W. is one of the ... umm... "least loved ever" American leaders as seen by the majority of the world, it's a bit embarassing that We, The People, could have elected a Nobel Prize winner and didn't have the foresight to do it. But it's not our fault.

We, The People, didn't elect him. The Supreme Court did.

Gore won the popular vote by about 500K.

An official recount in FL could have gone to either Bush or Gore, depending on how chads and such were tallied.

Gore reminds me of the story about the emperor who wore no clothes. He is surrounded by people (smart people) that are using him for their own agendas. The Nobel commitee is no exception. What better way to influence politics in a America? The chickens WILL come home to rest on this one.
