I think San Francisco is like any big city... you need to be aware of your surroundings. For the most part, the people are very friendly. The panhandlers take some getting used to... especially around the Wharf area- they tend to prey on tourists. I once asked a hotel concierge for the best tactic to deal with them. His reply was just to ignore them. Don't even make eye contact.
Every time I've gone... once I've parked the car after check-in, it hasn't moved again til check-out. I either walk or take the bus... fast, cheap, & easy. I save my money so I can splurge a little more at mealtime.
Take extra batteries & memory cards for the camera. Every way you turn is a picture postcard... one of the most unique & beautiful cities I've ever been to- especially if the sun is shining & the fog hasn't rolled in.
just pick some activities & do as little or as much as you want... ENJOY!
(and let us know how it goes)
