Default I'm looking for a cheap beater that gets at least 25mpg hwy

What do you guys think? I'm typiccally ford loyal, but i might stray for this one. I only want to spend 5k. Right now, the 2 cars I'm looking at are a 99 VR6 Jetta with 85k on the clock and a really nice 94 Z28 vert with 69k. Both would get upper teens in the city and mid to upper 20's on the highway. The car will be used 90% highway driving 30 miles each way to go to the police academy. I wouldn't ming a clean civic or an accord but the only ones I find either have over 200k or they have been destroyed by some punk who spray painted all the interior pieces bright yellow or some crap!

So what are your experiences? Need something reliable.

BTW, this has got to be one of the cleanest bone stock 14yr old Z28's I've seen! Not a fan of red, but i could deal.

Just picked up a 99 Miata for under 5K....30mpg and the top goes down .........118,000 miles on it but I've watched them for quite some time and have seen a ton of them with 200K+++ and still running strong....

Thanks Bill! And Mazda is even affiliated with Ford! Way to find a connection!

I have this strange feeling that you might try to stuff a V8 in there...

2002 VW Jetta GLI VR6 w/6speed

Got a good deal on it! Spent 3k over my budget, but it should be good and reliable!

Well, the Jetta is a lot nicer than a "cheap beater". Really nice, actually. I've always admired the styling.

A true cheap beater would be the old '94 Ford Escort:

I used one for the last couple of years that went for $550 off the back lot. It did 31 mpg inner city and 35-40 highway. It's rated 38 highway, just about king of the popcans.

Ugly, not something I would like to drive to the academy either. For one thing the Rescue class might mistakenly use it to practice the "jaws of life". Now that's a beater.

But where I work, there is apparently pride in driving cars that have barely escaped being burned in an alley somewhere. It's temporarily sitting in a pasture now. I hit a rock while out hunting with it and took out a rear strut. Hunted all day for $12 in gas and it's so low slung, I don't think the wheels turned all the time. Pretty good mileage for skidding partway and it still runs like a top except for the limp.

Ya, the jetta is a little better than a cheap beater. but it was still cheap. the 6 speed should be fun!

Perry, that would be awesome! The US needs to seriously consider the clean diesel! Add some more diesel refineries and that would be great!
