Walking to work!
Although gas prices here have not reached $4.00 a gallon yet (3.66), I have decided that I need to walk to work. Besides the health benefits, my wallet will thank me also.
On this, my first morning of walking, it took 20 minutes. I figure I was averaging about 3 mph! The other upside is my trip takes me through the local College campus. Lots of things to see!

Jay,
Walking isn't nearly as bad as some people seem to think. I love going off into the mountains and canyons we have around here and walking way back into them. It is almost like going back in time as I have found traces of old and long forgotten mines and pieces of things that I wonder how they got them that far into the wilds. And I walk to the post office much of the time if the weather isn't to bad.

Doug,
Thanks for rewording my statement. I am still arguing with a guy on another site about which of us has the rights to the wheel. I called the first stone we rounded off a wheel and later he called it the stone that rolls.

That wouldn't have been Mick would it? When he was looking at putting a band together?

If I lived a mile from work, I would probably do the same. I was thinking on getting a bicycle and riding to work for the health and money, but when I realized that it would still take me probably 2 hours, and 4 miles of that is on a 2 lane highway with a speed limit of 60, the safety aspect kinda rules it out. Too many people not yet awake driving 60+ and a narrow bridge (about 1 - 1 1/2' on each side of the lane) do not make for a pleasant ride. Plus with no showers at work, I don't think it would be long before my co-workers got upset.
Hey wait a minute, maybe they will pitch in to pay for my gas.

If I walked to work, I would arrive when it was time to leave.

I'm bummed my motorcycle only gets 45mpg, I been thinking about riding my moped to work instead. It gets about 85 mpg (modified, cruises up hill nicely at 45-50).

Doug,
Now that is one long commute. Some people up here drive to Sacramento and back, but I think most of them have about decided it would be as cheap to rent a room down there for the week. Especially the one guy that has the big pickup that gets 8 MPG.

Work? What is that? It's a 4 letter word! Oh, the horror. How many people must die?
Beam me up Scottie, time for my pills.

Warren,
Walking to your garage to get into the Cobra doesn't count. You should take a trip like Fred is on now. He gets off his motorcycle and walks a lot as he is going through some nice places.

I heard that! When my father was employed, there was no way he could walk either. I family lived fairly close to the Ohio River, he worked in a Steel Mill in Lorain , just west of Cleveland. Some times we would see him every other week, other times it would be more than a month before he came home. The house he rented to live in was barely bigger than my garage! (20X12) Talk about family togetherness!

When I was working in San Fran I had a couple of colleagues that DID stay in hotel's during the week and returned home on the weekend because the commute was so long.

Ernie,
That is the nice thing about living on an island. You can walk either direction and will eventually wind up back where you started. You could stop off at work on the trip.

I could probably ride a bike to work... (when i get home) it will only be 30 miles. But I think I'd ruin alot of clothes. Not to mention I'd need a shower by the time I got there.

Doug,
He was way to late to have anything to do with the naming of our early inventions. One of the guys on the other site is still trying to convince me that dirt was not a good name for dirt.
