Retiring, WHICH State?
Ron61 has been most helpful concerning Northern Calif, Redding, seriously considering that area. Then I got to thinking, what about Nevada? Taxes better? More retirement friendly? Any tips would be appreciated.
In spite of "Kalifornia" having excessive 'laws', the fact remains, the State has a lot going for it. I lived in Redding for many years and some great memories there. Ernie |
The way you crash motorcycles and blow up motors? Not sure the citizens of California can survive you living here.
If you're bringing the scooter...try the Bay Area, either the Castro or Marin. Honestly...check out the Reno area. Low taxes, close to California, absolutely beautiful outdoors, damn nice town. I've got several clients who retired there. |
I know people that retired to Fallon, Nevada. Just don't drink the water.:)

Don't leave out Florida...no state income tax, beautiful weather (except the occassional hurricane) and plenty to do in major metro areas like Miami, Tampa/St Pete or Orlando. And Daytona Speed Weeks.
And if you want to live very well...try Mexico, right across the US border. with the value of the dollar v. peso you can live very well on poco peso....and still come across for entertainment. A friend of mine retired from military and barely made it by in CA, moved across the border, rented a larger house than he had and hired a lady and her husband to keep up the house and run errands and still banks some for a rainy day. |
Florida is a swamp, it has sinkholes and it's relocated folks from the cigar island have an attitude nearly as bad as their smell.
It is a sublime POS. Except for the Keys and the area around Tampa. Tallest mountain in Florida is wherever a Great Dane takes a dump. Dumbasses don't even know how to vote or have an election...proven several times. It would be criminal for them to have a state tax...the state ain't worth paying for. Just my humble opinion, of course. I am the CobraBill of Florida. |

CA is a sinkhole in waiting and nothing could possibly smell as bad as LA Tallest mountain in Florida is wherever a Great Dane takes a dump. Don't need mountains when you have miles and miles of white beaches covered with beautiful women and NO UC BERKELEY types to ruin it Dumbasses don't even know how to vote or have an election...proven several times. Half of CA are dumbasses that shouldn't be allowed to vote...how did you guys let Waxman and Pelosi in?? It would be criminal for them to have a state tax...the state ain't worth paying for. Neither is CA; 1/2 the residents just aren't smart enough to realize it and the other half just like the 'feel' of it in the arse Just my humble opinion, of course. Ditto. Having lived in both, I'll take the blues over the lefts anyday....but I don't plan on leaving Texas anytime soon. |
Texas? Oh, you mean Northern Mexico.
|
Actually I think the Mexicans just want to use Texas as a way to get to the other states. I too like the Reno area. Neither is CA; 1/2 the residents just aren't smart enough to realize it and the other half just like the 'feel' of it in the arse You do realize that more than 2/3rds of the population in Calif. is from the Bay Area South. Ron :D |
A couple of my friends are headed to Texas, after thinking about it, nah, I can't do the Texass thing? Florida, to humid, to many mesquitos, it's a swamp I tell ya. :D
Reno sounds intriguing, I'll start researching that area. Anything SOUTH of Sacramento is 'to deep' for me. Gotta be north Cali or nothing. Carson City maybe, somewhere in the Reno area, I like that tax structure! |
i'm doing North carolina. tax's 10% of what i pay here in ct. weather is nice, maybe a couple cooler months in dec and jan but awesome for boating ans cruise's in the cobra. And building alot cheaper than here.

I found a site once while browsing the real estate listings that would let you figure the property taxes in any state and now I can't remember where it was. I know I figured what they would be on some places in Arkansas and was surprised at how much they were. I also did them on a place or two in New Mexico using that site. Wish I had marked it or at least written it down. At least Nevada has no state income taxes. And Reno is just a 4 hour drive from here if the traffic isn't bad. So anywhere in that area I like.
Ron :) |
You know I DID seriously consider North Carolina for awhile! Well, theres hardly an area in the US I haven't considered as far as that goes, but yeah, Carolina, not a bad call.
In the end I want to be within a reasonable driving distance of 'friends and family' and that put's me on the west coast. Hence, Nevada, Calif, ruled out Oregon, I just can't take that rain anymore. Yes, I WILL be bringing the motorcycles and the Cobra, so need some fair weather. Tuscon was right up there in the top ten, to dam hot in the summer I think. Taxes are beginning to play a HUGE roll in the final analysis. I worry about Reno being to cold... It's gonna tough after living in Hawaii for 20 years to find some place that's almost as good. BUT, I am SO tired of living on this tiny freakin' rock where all you can do is drive in circles. They closed down our only race track a couple of years ago, I've been depressed ever since. |
Ernie,
The following is just part of what the article said, but it is one of those that they change every 15 minutes, so if I post the link it will likely be gone by the time anyone tries to look at it. The housing problems largely aren't national but regional in nature, said Susan Wachter, a real estate professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. "The interesting thing is that there are parts of the country where housing prices are doing fine, thank you," she said. In fact, only five states are in what she would consider a housing recession: California, Arizona, Nevada, Florida and Michigan. Ron :) |
Thats a good point Ron, and I'm following a basic real estate guideline, sell high, buy low. Prices are STRONG in Hawaii, my place is just about maxed out in current value, time to sell. And BUY in a depressed zone, like Redding. WOW, terrific prices there right now, I could get a nice place and pocket some serious change when the smoke cleared. Same for Reno area, that is a little farther out than I wanted, but it sure is a nice area, I always did like Reno...
Michigan? Whew, spent three years there and it took me the next 10 to warm up after I moved to Hawaii. Michagian? Not gonna happen! :D |
I have lived all over the world and country; each area has its own positives and negatives. Kind of comes down to what you are looking for and in what priority...
1. Cold winters or rainy winters or no winters? 2. Warm weather or hot weather (dry heat is a myth, 112+ degrees is hot).? 3. Above with/without humidity? 4. Some kind of seasons? 5. Cost of living, low/moderate/high? 6. Access to cultural amenities? 7. Etc...etc I think when you start breaking it down like this, list starts getting shorter and easier to digest. |
1. Cold winters (tops the list).
2. Hot summers, 112 is hot, period, agreed, even Redding makes me think twice! 3. I sweat like a pig, can't handle humidity, maybe 112 is a dry heat? :D 4. Seasons? What are those, I've forgotten. 5. Cost of living, OK now were getting somewhere, maybe 5 goes to the top of the 'good list'. 6. Cultural amenties, very important, I think even more so in a retirement plan. Social impact is a HUGE factor on overall happiness levels. A good local Cobra club should be to handle that. Maybe a couple of lists, good/bad. Nice tip. I've lived all over myself. A couple of years in Nashville even, not bad. What I remember most about Nashville, pretty girls, them Southern Bells are a knockout. |
lived in michigan, florida, newport beach, seattle, chicago, houston and worked on Oahu and Maui and now live in SOUTH TEXAS. Nothing better, Mexico next door, South Padre a few miles away, best home prices anywhere, friendly people, good golf, San Antonio, the riverwalk and the Texas Hill Country only 3 hours away....no income taxes and a friendly business climate. Don't make a mistake, check it out.
|
My friends are in the Dallas area I think it is, there reports of hot weather bothered me. Their reports of the taxes were pretty good. Maybe I should revisit the SOUTH Texas idea. Someone mentioned Mexico, is that actually 'do able' or just for a few that really know what the heck their getting into? The extreme low cost of living sounds quite interesting... Can you BUY land/house there or have to rent?
Is there some kind of 'professional' service a guy can hire to check out some of these details? Like a 'national' or 'international' real estate type person? |
Almost everywhere East of the Rockies have humid summers. Some worse than others.
