One of the complaints I have at work is the constant increasing official train radio chatter regarding official instructions and authorities. This has escalated beyond reason since many "improved" safety procedures have required ever more wordy instructions, repeats and repeats of the repeats in a somewhat fruitless effort to insure no misunderstanding could possibly occur in train movement.
I consider this a far worse distraction than a cell phone (which is illegal to use while moving) because it is like 100's of phone calls an hour. On top of that, they answer themselves like an answering machine, most of which are a wrong number at inopportune times. Yet I am compelled to carefully listen to each until I fully realize I can disregard it.
Waaahh. Waaahh.

Ron
I have never, repeat NEVER, sent a text message and I have no intention of beginning any time soon. I use my cell phone 90+% of the time for business so I normally make calls while I am stopped or not in the car. However, I do have to answer the phone while driving on occasion. Answering with the hands free system works better than trying to answer it in the normal way. My phone also has voice activation dialing but only for numbers that are in memory.

Wes,UP is double tracking the Sunset Route.Right now we have 6 gangs working in a 30 mile stretch of track.Add in two dispatchers,Power desk and the yardmaster(it's close enough to Tucson to hear the tower). Then on top of that, you have the idiot Maintenance-in-the-way types who treat the radio like it's their personel cell phone.

Wayne,
The use of the word YOU in my post wasn't referring to you in particular. I just meant anyone that has a phone as I see this happening here more and more. Some person driving along looking down in their lap and then after they get through they will raise their head and look out the windshield. That was just a generalization that came out wrong. If I owned a cell phone I would have been included in it.

Ron, I didn't take it personally. I guess that I just hate text messaging.
I am also amazed at just how much some people use their cell phone for totally useless purposes. "What ya doing?; Nothing, what ya doing?; nothing; what ya goin to do tomorrow?" and it goes on and on.

That would be bored and no imagination/creativity to keep themselves entertained
