Exclamation New Cell Phone Law

Just reading in today's paper about California's new cell phone law. You can't drive with a cell phone in your hand but you can text message and dial and that is ok. Now that doesn't make sense to me as a person has to be looking at the darn thing to push the buttons and it is ok to hold it in their hands while doing this according to the way the paper presented the law. So if they presented the whole thing and it is factual, all they have done is make it illegal to talk with one in your hand, but you can look down to push buttons and dial or text message. That seems to me it would be more dangerous than having them hold the darn things to their ear and talk. At least that way the can look out the windshield though from the wrecks around here with them I don't think they do.

Another great CHP thing going on here right now. Due to the increase in car thefts they have started planting cars with GPS and cameras in them and leaving the keys in so they can catch the person stealing the car. They have a picture in today's paper of a guy that took one of them and you can see his face quite clearly. Problem is that was 5 months ago and they still haven't caught him, but they did recover their car. Also reported is a huge increase of confrontations at gas stations with people not paying or draining a cars tank while the owner is in line inside to pay. Things are going down hill rather fast around here.

Ron,
They are drilling holes in the bottom of tanks here to steal the fuel.

OOPs didn't mean to hijack the thread.

We need the cell phone law here as well. At least it is a start.

Hi Ron,

Pretty common now?

people using a battery powered saw-sal to cut off the cats off trucks and SUVs (there is enough clearance to get under the vehicle) and selling them (platinum, rhodium and palladium) for scrap.

Several months ago my converter worked tripled. All due to them being cut off in shopping mall parking lots.

I am afraid this type of stuff is just going to increase. I see more and more of the doper type driving up and down the streets looking over houses and property. They will even stop and get out and walk up to the fence and stand and look everything over right out in the daylight in front of everyone. So far the only break ins around here have been houses with no alarms, dogs, or NRA signs. I even watched three Jehovah Witnesses walk up to my driveway gates a short time ago and spend about 5 minutes looking at the alarm and No Trespassing signs and then one of them pointed to the NRA sticker and they walked off.
I fear that the world as we knew it when younger no longer exists.

So, I heard they had a "Seat Belt check" along one of the roads.

Before you get to the police checking the drivers, there is a sign explaining why there is a huge slowdown. I can not for the life of me understand how they could have found anyone that did not have there seat belt on.

I suppose there are those that would not buckle up even after they read a sign telling them there is a seat belt check ahead.

Tru,

It is the same with the DUI checkpoints. They will advertise for two days prior to setting them up just where and when they are going to be checking cars and it never fails that they will still arrest at least three people who were driving drunk. They either can't read or just don't comprehend what it means.

There is a reason that the darwin awards continue to happen every year. Remember Mother nature does not reward the best genes, but rather rewards the most prolific breeders. Due to all of the advances we have, the dumb are not dying off as fast and are breeding faster than any other group. As a result, the average IQ is dropping like a rock in a pond.

Steve,

Now that is quite a sign. I can't believe people can be so dumb at times. However I am surprised that some person didn't sue and claim entrapment. They tried that here in Redding after some fool got arrested at one of the DUI check points and he was really drunk, not just a little over the limit. Thankfully they got a judge who has little sympathy for stupidity I believe was the way he worded it and since then there have been no law suits over getting arrested in one of those check points.

Joe,

Due to all of the advances we have, the dumb are not dying off as fast.

Are you trying to say that I keep defying the odds??

Cell phone use is very dangerous. I refuse to answer or make a call while driving.

A couple of days ago, a trolley train in Boston rear-ended another train stopped on the tracks. Even though the speed limit for the train was 35 MPH in that area, the front five feet of the train was totaled. What a mess. About 20 people were injured, and the driver was killed.

The NTSB is investigating, and they think that that the driver was talking on her cell phone. Of course, cell phone usage is strictly forbidden by the transportation authority.

OK, now all you rude hijackers can go back to converter theft and gasoline scams.

Naa you are not one of the dumb. Some of the people I have to deal with here at work take the cake. Not only the dumb customers, but IT is in that mix. They are currently installing a program that blocks all email except internal to prevent viruses. Most communications from our customers is via email. They also just implemented a new web portal for our customers (old one worked fine, new one is "prettier"), but changed everyones login and password, took away the admins ability to load/delete files, and implemented it with no testing and no warning. They don't understand why we are so angry. We have customers whose business has been shut down all week due to this and are submitting fines per the contract. ITs response is to put in a ticket and we will get to it.

Joe,

That sounds about like the phone companies were back in the stone age when I was working for them. If you have something that is working well, replace it with a dish or transmitter that has more gadgets and may work 50% of the time. Dam, what ever happened to KISS. Now they can't even leave the regular e-mail programs alone. As soon as one starts to work, they come out with a new one that has flowers and junk you can put in them and it takes years to get them to work. That is why I told them to change me back to my old program or I would find another provider as I am sick of the continual improved e-mail programs that won't work. If it works, leave it alone in a case like this.

We have a seat belt law here in Taxachusetts, but you have to be pulled over for another reason to get a ticket. The police cannot legally stop you for just the non-usage of a seat belt.

How many excuses does a policeman need to pull you over. They can make one up, so I always wear my seat belt.

Ooops, looks like I'm a hijacker too.

When we were in Florida, there was a sign on the side of the road. It was one of those digital City signs they pull behind a city truck out for emergency road repairs.

The sign read:
"Turn here for ticket"

You would not believe how many stupid people there are that would drive across the median to get a ticket. Besides, a ticket to what? is what I thought. When we went over the top of the hill there were about forty or fifty cars lined up. The police were at the front of the lines giving them all tickets. For what? Crossing the median.

True story!

Ron,
There are a lot of people here now that are starting companies to watch your cars and property at night. It is sort of like the Neighborhood crime watch, only these guys are paid to watch your property. They are not considered "security" and are not armed, and they are not licensed. When there is an issue they call 911 and ring the bell and wake you up to shot the perp.

...

One of the complaints I have at work is the constant increasing official train radio chatter regarding official instructions and authorities. This has escalated beyond reason since many "improved" safety procedures have required ever more wordy instructions, repeats and repeats of the repeats in a somewhat fruitless effort to insure no misunderstanding could possibly occur in train movement.

I consider this a far worse distraction than a cell phone (which is illegal to use while moving) because it is like 100's of phone calls an hour. On top of that, they answer themselves like an answering machine, most of which are a wrong number at inopportune times. Yet I am compelled to carefully listen to each until I fully realize I can disregard it.

Waaahh. Waaahh.

Ron

I have never, repeat NEVER, sent a text message and I have no intention of beginning any time soon. I use my cell phone 90+% of the time for business so I normally make calls while I am stopped or not in the car. However, I do have to answer the phone while driving on occasion. Answering with the hands free system works better than trying to answer it in the normal way. My phone also has voice activation dialing but only for numbers that are in memory.

Wes,UP is double tracking the Sunset Route.Right now we have 6 gangs working in a 30 mile stretch of track.Add in two dispatchers,Power desk and the yardmaster(it's close enough to Tucson to hear the tower). Then on top of that, you have the idiot Maintenance-in-the-way types who treat the radio like it's their personel cell phone.

Wayne,

The use of the word YOU in my post wasn't referring to you in particular. I just meant anyone that has a phone as I see this happening here more and more. Some person driving along looking down in their lap and then after they get through they will raise their head and look out the windshield. That was just a generalization that came out wrong. If I owned a cell phone I would have been included in it.

Ron, I didn't take it personally. I guess that I just hate text messaging.

I am also amazed at just how much some people use their cell phone for totally useless purposes. "What ya doing?; Nothing, what ya doing?; nothing; what ya goin to do tomorrow?" and it goes on and on.
