I get spooked enough watching morons at the gun range. I try to get on the left end so I can watch everyone else.

Wise move. This will be my last Summer of doing any instruction and I only have one more to go. I even get scared of standing behind them at times. Our range has the dividers between the shooters, but even then one or two of them will always back out waving their gun around.
Now my turn to start shooting more often. I have 6 free passes that I have accumulated over the past year or so.

When my dad was young he lost an older sister because an idiot friend of
hers was playing with an "unloaded" gun. He taught me that there was no
such thing as an unloaded gun - ALWAYS treat every gun as if it were loaded.
It has worked for me and I passed that on to my son, who I am sure will
do the same. KISS - so simple and it does work.

Flip,
My Father started teaching me to shoot and about guns when I was 6 and he was very strict about safety. Razor strap so. But no matter how much you try to stress it, and that is the one thing that we go over and over, I would almost bet you that some person is going to mess up before the 4 hour class is over. And these are grown people, not small kids. When they come in we have them unload their guns and place them on a table with the slide or cylinders open. At least two will be talking and point their gun right at another person while doing this. I would like to fail them and kick them out right there but it is required they have a chance to finish the class. Then we can deny them the certificate. As I said before, thank God I won't be doing this any more as it is more frightening than being out in the canyons and watching out for the dopers that shoot at people.

I hear you Ron, you just cannot eliminate dumb in some people, and this
applies to everything, not just guns. I used to run into similar situations when
I was teaching skydiving and jump mastering students - seems common sense
isn't always available - and those are the people you hear about - like the
guy in New York that just took himself out jumping without a parachute.

Flip,
You are right about everything has some dumb people included in the group. It just seems there are more of them lately than there used to be. Just like the thread where we were discussing people getting killed by trains and all the stupid things they did. There is a book called "The Dumbing Down Of America'" or something along that lines and it is really more accurate than I think even the person that wrote it thought.

Ron,
In some ways I am inclined to think there has always been an ample supply
of Darwinian candidates throughout history - but as of late with the invention
of the internet by Gore - more of these "incidents" are reported to a much
wider audience at a much faster rate - hence it just seems like more. In the
old days you just never heard about a lot of the stuff going on. Ain't
progress wonderful!

Flip,
Is this really progress or just a glorification of the news media now that they have faster and more ways to get their slanted stories out to a wider audience. I think we were better off when we never had to see and hear about every nut that came along.
