That is a bit hilarious. The only way you will see prices drop is if the U.S. nationalizes our oil fields and uses the oil solely for U.S. consumption.

There are so many other factors, that even if we drilled for every drop of oil in the U.S., the price of gasoline would probably come down a few cents at best. It's time we start putting our money to some form of alternative energy or fuel, and I don't mean corn ethanol.

I have to pretty much agree with you, nevermind65.

American oil companies are finally making a decent profit now ...but the main cost culprit is wholesale crude prices. Even if we drilled in some of the off limit areas that some of these companies want, it wouldn't dent prices in the here-and-now. It's a good time to politically weasel into them though, so we may well expect corporate propoganda efforts with websites devoted to "loo$en re$triction$".

In the long run, America is better off with "sticker-shock" at the pumps earlier rather than later. It's the only thing some people understand. It's kind of a "grasshopper/ant" thing again, something like the housing crunch. Folks that planned ahead won't suffer as much. Years ago I bought a '94 4wd pick-up rated at 22 mpg highway. My buddy bought an F-250 V-10 and called my truck wimpy. It is. Then gas went way up and he got pretty quiet. Whoops.

America is burning less fuel this year than last. Even so prices will rise at least about a buck a year maybe hitting $5.50/gal gas next year. Get ready.

IMHO instead of the emotional plea, "Drill here. Drill now. Pay less", we are again better off with a little tough love from our congress ...instead of a useless attempted bailout for the whiners.

I hope congress stays on the common sense path and meddles as little as possible. Alternative energy and mostly higher efficiency will follow quickly on it's own.

Look around the room you are in. Over 90% of the products you see are either made of petroleum or treated with it. The last thing we should do is burn it all. 'Course a wooden laptop would have a much nicer patina than plain ol' plastic.

I've heard and agree, a simple approval by our lawmakers to drill and build more refineries, will have a huge impact!. As for alternative energy, It's the only alternative!, but... this country must have relief until we can transition. Most of you complain and won't get involved!, let your lawmaker know how you feel.

Here's the problem with refineries. The oil companies do not want to build them. A Congressional investigation some years ago, with testimony from major oil companies, came to the conclusion that oil companies want the bottleneck at the refinery. They make a lot more money that way and can run at full capacity.

There is also another issue that is rarely brought up. Sweet light crude. All but 2 refineries in the U.S. use sweet light crude for our gasoline, which is the most expensive version of crude oil. They can build refineries that use sour crude, but the cost for the refinery is a fair amount more even though the price of a barrel of oil is now about $15-20 less and there is beginning to be a glut of sour crude on the market, which is actually driving the price down even more.

By the way...the oil we drill in Alaska is not considered sweet light crude (also known as WTI) It is a medium grade of crude with higher sulfur content that is only refined in certain refineries in the U.S.

Building new refineries is not exclusive to oil companies, Richard Branson is looking into building his own. During the last crunch Delta Air Lines almost bought a refinery but, got screwed when an oil company promised fuel and at a set priced if they would not get into the refinery business.
