National Debt Clock Out Of Digits

The National Debt Clock in New York has now ran out of enough digits to record the National Debt.

I am sure the government can lend NY some money for an extra digit or 2.

How can our Gov't owe more money than what's in circulation?

According to the Federal Reserve H.6 report (http://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/h6/Current/) there is 7.86 Trillion dollars in circulation (electronic and real).

Am I missing something here?

They just spend it whether they have it or not. Kind of like if you had $30 million and went out and bought $50 million worth of stuff. Main difference is you can't own a printing press and run in and print worthless bills to make it look as if yo have the $50 million.

That clock is one of the only lasting memories of NY.... We couldn't believe how quick the numbers were ticking over.....and that was back in '94...
