Default " Car Insurance May Not Cover You at the Track

Source: NY Sunday Times October 19, WHEELSPIN Page 12, Automobiles Section:

" IT’S no secret that insurance companies don’t like the people they cover to drive fast. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that the industry has been removing a policy loophole that insured drivers on racetracks.

That has left weekend warriors uninsured if they participate in track days or attend high-performance driving schools. Jerry Kunzman, executive director of the National Auto Sport Association, said that participation at its track events had jumped fivefold since 2003 and that many of those drivers had no idea they were not covered..

“Maybe 25 or 30 percent have done the research, the middle third just assumes they are covered, and the top third just don’t have a clue,” he said

Finding an Insurer;

By ROY FURCHGOTT
Published: October 17, 2008

" INSURANCE for high-performance driving schools is relatively new and still somewhat rare. As insurers work to determine the form these policies will take, there are some significant differences among the few companies offering them. It pays to shop. "

Don,

Those of us who track on a regular basis know if it happens at the track it is not covered by our insurance policies. Really no loophole or surprise to be had except for those who try to skirt the issue by having their cars towed off premise and a few miles away to stage an accident. I watched in amazement a certain NYC Porsche owner (gold car mind you) having his car towed back to Manhattan after a brush up against the now famous blue armco at Watkins Glen. Funny how a fellow racer that was there that same event just happened to be the adjuster that was sent out to survey the damage that supposedly happened on the Cross Bronx Expressway against a hit and run driver with, yup, you guessed it, a blue van.............The owner was so cocky about it he fought the denial of coverage in court, actually made it to the very first day and then dropped the case when the first witness was the adjuster with pictures he took of the car at the track right after the incident..........These days it's funny to watch guys drive their cars to the track, then cover, remove, or change license plates in an attempt to "keep themselves covered"...........

Most every auto policy I've seen has an exclusion for this, this is not word for word, but close;

Exceptions; any form of organized racing,timed events,demostrations of speed, and a few other things I can't remember.......

I know of one case similar to the one Bill posted, simple solution, the insurance company went ahead and paid the claim and after the owner cashed the insurance check, they filed insurance fraud charges against him and he was arrested, charged and convicted!!!!!!!!!!!!

READ ALL EXCLUSIONS ON YOU AUTO POLICY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm just curious---are there any policies that cover racing?

Make that X2

When you are on the track, you take your car out at your own risk.

in addition... AAA, will not tow you from the track if you break down. In my younger days of driving to the track, i remember pushing the car out to the road so AAA would pick me up. tow me 100 miles, drop me along the highway,
then re-call for road assistance and get towed again.
lloyds of london would write a policy for racing, don't expect a small premium.

I saw a wreck at the drag strip and overheard a guy, 'he better tow it close to home and push it in a tree'.
