lithium ion portable tools
I'm going to buy my father a lithium ion tool kit for his B-day. I bought a Black-n-Decker drill a while ago, but haven't been impressed with its quality, but the lithium battery is definitely a step forward. Does anybody have some recommendations on which tool kit is the best value, or best overall?
Ryobi, Dewalt, Rigid, Craftsman, etc. ?

Consumer reports is your best recommend, I bought a makita drill with two batteries, the replacement batteries costs more than the whole outfit!. Check battery replacement costs on all all you mentioned.

For low priced lithium tools, this Black & Decker VPX series kicks butt. Found them at Menards, sometimes Walmart for as low as $10 for a driver/drill battery and charger.
They are almost too good to leave on the market for the money, with mechanical 2-speed trannies and scads of torque.

I have an older Craftsman 19.2 volt set that has lasted for years, I have 2 drills, a 5" circular saw, sawsall, and a florescent light. One of the 2 batteries I have will not charge anymore, but I leave them in the garage which will shorten the life of them when it freezes. I never think to bring them in. As far as the tools go, the drills are really good, the Sawsall drains the battery so fast it is not really all that useful, the 5" saw works well for around the house, but the florescent light is the best. It is not a standard flashlight looking head, but the whole side is a twin tube florescent that really lights up your work area. When workmen come to my house and have to go into the attic, I always offer it to them instead of their light. All will take it out of courtesy, but end up putting their light away when they see how well it actually works.

Home Depot bought Ridged Tools and when I bought my 1/2" drill it came with lifetime batteries. Might want to check it out. The batteries are the long range killer!

Every power tool i own is Dewalt.One drill has survived being dropped from a telephone pole THREE times.On the other hand- my Crapsman drill died after being dropped(from 6 inches) in sand.
