Australia Plan To Block Web Sites

This could lead to a long drawn out bunch of lawsuits and arguments. I saw some time back that China had blocked access to the New York Times site. Australia seems to be mostly concentration on child pornography and such, but who knows where it may lead.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy proposed the filter earlier this year, following up on a promise of the year-old Labor Party government to make the Internet cleaner and safer.

Conroy has risen to prominence by being a back-room dealer. Here in Australia some ISPs have complained of attempts to stifle criticism of his plan.

Only extraordinary hubris lets someone suggest that they'll clean up the internet - they're not cleaning it up anyway - its just a filter - everything is still there.

I have no doubt that it will be the thin edge of the wedge if they succeed.
