Newsflash! US to bail out German Automaker

Newsflash! US to bail out German Automaker!

From Obama's speech tonight. 24 Feb 2009

"As for our auto industry, everyone recognizes that years of bad decision-making and a global recession have pushed our automakers to the brink. We should not, and will not, protect them from their own bad practices. But we are committed to the goal of a re-tooled, re-imagined auto industry that can compete and win. Millions of jobs depend on it. Scores of communities depend on it. And I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it. None of this will come without cost, nor will it be easy. But this is America. We don’t do what’s easy. We do what is necessary to move this country forward."

So, which nation invented the automobile?

Perhaps Obama doesn't know who Karl Friedrich Benz or Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler is. (Does Daimler-Benz sound familiar?)

Maybe He has never heard of a Mercedes Benz either...wouldn't surprise me--I hear all his buddies drive Toyotas.

I hope He knows more about the economy than cars.

I was wondering if anyone else caught that mistake...

acindrich 02-24-2009 08:54 PM

I think President Obama simply misunderestimated the origins of the automobile.

TXBLU 02-24-2009 08:58 PM

I caught it. My wife thought I was crazy when I pointed it out. Henry Ford invented the assembly line and introduced the 8 hour work day.

Actually Oldsmobile first used assembly line production, not Ford...

The current President also does not know how may states we have according to one the pre-election talk down to us presentations.

That is just the tip of the iceberg.

I'm sure it was a simple mistake - give the guy a break! Anyway, I'm sure he's going to be much better than his idiot predecessor!

It's gonna be a long 4 years....

Like the small mistake during his campaign when his daughter had to remind him that he wasn't in the state that he kept mentioning how proud he was to be there.

And of course there is the really great mind at work a week or so In Birmingham I believe it was. I watched him and he was telling all of the people how he would have this overpass built so some highway that he thought went through there wouldn't be causing them traffic problems. I don't remember the highway numbers, but his overpass would go East to West and the Highway goes South to North. And also as another just minor thing, that particular highway misses Birmingham by 17 miles. I sure hope he can remember which country he is in when he passes his next PORK bill.

Guys, guys, guys... quit pickin' on the poor fellow. He is, after all, going to cure cancer, make sure everyone has free health care, and make the country energy independent!

Picking that comment out of the entire speech is missing the point of what got us into this mess. I realize this is a car site and I zoned in on it as well, but we have a problem that is much larger. Starting with junk bonds then Enron, to the latest scam where bankers made millions pushing money at people to buy houses they can't afford and are now going bankrupt. Unless we can break the cycle of greed in this country we're screwed. How low can a person get like Madoff who screwed over some of his best friends for his own personal gain. I hope we haven't reached the point where we think that banker in Florida who distributed the 60 million to present and past employees is a sucker rather than a saint.

SDfletch - politics and this site have gone hand in hand since I joined, It's like a TV, if you don't like the channel, change it (or in this case ignore the thread)

Going back to David's initial comment - I guess his speechwriters/researchers missed that point. This comment doesn't scare me half as much as what he and congress have done on the past 5 weeks. God help the future generations. (I know now I am going to get someone complaining about the G word:).

Is this an airplane?

A very popular local radio commentator here said that Ford built the fist car. He said all of the previous cars were just experiments...
