How many open wheel guys have had any success other than Mario Andretti in Nascar? The list is short.[/QUOTE]
Two right off of the top of my head,
Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne.
How many more can we come up with.

Other then Stewart, Montoya, Mario and AJ Foyt...I can't think of any.
But I'd have liked to seen Michael Schumacher or Ayrton Senna try their hand behind the wheel. Or how 'bout some Nascar types move to F1 for a shot, Jeff Gordon tried a few laps in an F1 car and was impressed.

Tony Stewart is a freak! He can be in anything and be a winner! Only thing i don't thnk Smoke has done is Baja.... don't count that!
Bottom line is, if the vagisil, kotex, KY, Victoria's Secret FORD wants to be a successful team, they gotta start in the nationwide just like most every other driver in the cup series.

Well, let's define successful open wheel driver's. Tony Stewart - successful, Kasey Kahne - not so much in my opinion. Most Sunday's he is in the way like M. Waltrip. If you consider all the commercials he's been in as part of success, then yeah, I guess he is. His Cup stat's are:
194 starts
9 wins
Avg. finish spot - 18
Successful? Not if I'm a sponsor. Tony Stewart:
266 starts
34 wins
Avg. finish spot - 12
As someone mentioned, Tony Stewart is really something special to watch, not sure how long his career will be, but the guy can drive anything good. So, back to the question of how many open wheel drivers have been successful in NASCAR, not many and I would attest that TS is the only one. Mario, in 14 races, had one win, one top five and three top ten. The one win though was at Daytona in '67, so since that was such a high profile race, he is thought to be "successful". Just a matter of opinion I guess.

I agree with you about Tony Stewart. He can drive anything and look at his success as a first year owner. Sure beat Michael Waltrip as I believe both of Stewart's cars have a win this year. He also bought Eldora Raceway and is successful at running that, so he is not just a driver but a businessman as well. And after he got his temper under control he is one of the better interviews I think.

Ron, I am a TS fan and a dirt track fan. I have been to the prelude to the dream and it was waaaay better than any nascar race i have ever been to and I have been to 2 of the most popular being Bristol and Daytona. For the prelude... you are on the edge of your seat the whole race! It was AWESOME!!! Plan on going next year again since it will be just a couple months after i get back.

I like TS just because he actually shows some personality..not always good, but personality! Better than the other corporate spokesmodels, IMHO.

Danica should seek out someone like Tony S and get their candid opinion on the challenges of making the transition from IRL to NASCAR. If there is a switch, the Team and crew chief cohesiveness will be essential to any success.
Not taking anything away from Tony, but his crew chief Darian Grubb also deserves recognition. Darian was a FT engineer at Hendrick and fill in crew chief for Johnson that Tony actively recruited .......a smooth working relationship.

A 3rd Stewart-Haas car in 2010? TS being her mentor in the offseason? That would be very interesting!

That could work and would have a chance if the economy was better. But right now I think any sponsor is going to want instant success and I just don't think she can make the switch and do that as the cars are so different. Not a knock on her ability, but just consider that sponsors are cutting back on the proven drivers and I can't see to many willing to put up the money for a new team until they see some results. Kind of a catch 22 situation. Maybe once the economy recovers, it would be easier for her to get the time and money she will need but by then she will not be in such demand.

Well... there is already lots of talk of stewart-Haas fielding a 3rd car next year. While she would be at a disadvantage due to experience, i think for a team financially, she is the best option. When teams are having sponsors cutting $$ on the experienced drivers, an unexperienced but unique driver like a female or a minority, could have it's advantages!
I can see it now Jaqueefa will be running in the 69 KFC, FUBU, 50 cent chevrolet... it's the one with spinnaz and all chrome!!!!
I think if she had any chance, it would be with the TS team. If she has any real talent, TS will draw it out of her and be a great mentor. Where a team would be foolish is to sign her ONLY for the sponsorship and expect her to just jump in and go.

Tony would offer to Danica an excellent opportunity.......having done with success both open wheel and NASCAR. And, most important, Danica would listen, considering Tony's personality, credentials and accomplishments.
He has wanted to gp back to the Indy 500, might offer an opportunity as a car owner, as Danica would more than likely not be in contention ( how's that for a forecast ) for the Chase and could miss a few races.Or, someone offers Tony a non-cash partnership in an IRL team
With GM/Chevrolet minimizing or/and eliminating their financial support to the major Teams, any 3rd driver for Tony would need to attract substantial sponsor dollars, could be a sponsor that is currently not in NASCAR. Might be a better candidate for the 3rd driver, but bringing sponsor dollars in today's market is a definite plus. I wonder what commitment Gibbs made to Home Depot regarding Tony's replacement, expecting there will be transition years.
Comparison can be made to Waltrip and NAPA, sure is not his ranking in the standings and finishes, but the commercials and marketing, at least up to this year.

If the latest rumors are true DEI may have an opening next year. I have heard that Truex may be leaving them. He kind of flopped as their superstar and I guess he is unhappy with the way things are ran. I listened to him on one of the shows and all he would say is he is keeping his options open and hasn't signed anything for next year.

" JR Motorsports executive says team interested in Danica Patrick - JR Motorsports is interested in putting IndyCar Series driver Danica Patrick in a Nationwide car, team general manager Kelley Earnhardt said Monday."
FanZoneSports.com
" FONTANA, Calif—Though he’s not directly involved in the discussions, Dale Earnhardt Jr. acknowledged Friday at Auto Club Speedway that his JR Motorsports organization has been talking to IndyCar Series star Danica Patrick about her foray into NASCAR racing. The talks have been the province of his sister, Kelley Earnhardt, JRM’s general manager. Earnhardt Jr., however, expressed respect for Patrick’s ability and determination. "
