Dear Leader to Address Students.....

President Obama’s Address to Students Across America September 8, 2009

Menu of Classroom Activities: President Obama’s Address to Students Across America

Produced by Teaching Ambassador Fellows, U.S. Department of Education
September 8, 2009

Before the Speech:
• Teachers can build background knowledge about the President of the United States and his speech by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama and motivate students by asking the following questions:
Who is the President of the United States?
What do you think it takes to be President?
To whom do you think the President is going to be speaking?
Why do you think he wants to speak to you?
What do you think he will say to you?
• Teachers can ask students to imagine being the President delivering a speech to all of the students in the United States. What would you tell students? What can students do to help in our schools? Teachers can chart ideas about what they would say.
• Why is it important that we listen to the President and other elected officials, like the mayor, senators, members of congress, or the governor? Why is what they say important?

During the Speech:
• As the President speaks, teachers can ask students to write down key ideas or phrases that are important or personally meaningful. Students could use a note-taking graphic organizer such as a Cluster Web, or students could record their thoughts on sticky notes. Younger children can draw pictures and write as appropriate. As students listen to the speech, they could think about the following:
What is the President trying to tell me?
What is the President asking me to do?
What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about?
• Students can record important parts of the speech where the President is asking them to do something. Students might think about: What specific job is he asking me to do? Is he asking anything of anyone else? Teachers? Principals? Parents? The American people?

Finish your assignment....

I can't recall any president having ever done this. Hitler addressed the youth of Germany to indoctrinate them. A parallel?

Roscoe 09-01-2009 12:05 PM

So has every other despot......be afraid....be very afraid....

LURK 09-01-2009 12:15 PM

Sorry. I'm only afraid when our leaders are reading "My Pet Goat" to children while there's a terrorist attack.

Roscoe 09-01-2009 12:17 PM

Like he knew, right?

OH, Sorry....your from Vermont.....I understand....

LURK 09-01-2009 12:19 PM

Wanna compare gun laws, cupcake? :)

392cobra 09-01-2009 12:20 PM

Why not bring up FDR jerking off while the Japanese attacked Pearl too ?

LURK 09-01-2009 12:23 PM

Sounds about as sensible as drawing a parallel between this and Hitler- so- be my guest!

Roscoe 09-01-2009 12:23 PM

From Huffpo...

Right after the Vermont legislature voted (100 to 49, precisely the 2/3 needed) to over-ride Governor Jim Douglas' veto this morning of a law permitting gay marriage, my daughter got a text message, "Yeah, Vermont!"

She was not the only one cheering when the vote was announced. I felt an elation that surprised me. These men and women in the legislature are not professional politicians; they are citizen legislators representing small districts where voters know who they are, meet them at the general store and chat with them at the gas station. The grass roots support that was evident in today's vote signifies strong support for equal rights for our gay and lesbian relatives, friends and neighbors to a degree that has not happened before.

Maybe he want to tell them they each owe him $38,202

Pay up or sell me your soul.

Josef Stalin, in a 1934-Jul-23 “Education is a weapon, whose effect depends on who holds it in his hands and at whom it is aimed.”

Lenin "give me just one generation of youth and I'll transform the whole world."

LURK 09-01-2009 12:34 PM

You seem suspiciously familiar with Stalin and Lenin's teachings... ;)

Jamo 09-01-2009 12:43 PM

...is this going anywhere, guys?

computerworks 09-01-2009 12:48 PM

...just the resident nihilist proving Godwin's law again.

Roscoe 09-01-2009 12:56 PM

This is important and should not be hijacked. Let's try to keep it on topic. Hey? My brother in law lives in Vermont and he's not such a bad sort........

BTW, I have several volumes on Stalin and Lenin. I've studied them over the years. Also on Venona and the Mitrokhin Archives (look them up). Also on the KGB. Also Mao's little red books. And, yes, Adolph and Fidel. It's given me great insight into how they work and how their systems suppress the populace.

Oh, one last book. Alinskys Rules for Radicals

I guess I'm not paranoid enough, I don't see a problem with this or any other POTUS addressing the kids at school. ANY school. The guidelines offered to the students seem quite reasonable from a learning stand point.

WHAT is the problem here?

Roscoe 09-01-2009 01:21 PM

I have no problem with anyone addressing kids to study and work hard and make something of themselves. However, The One is speaking to his agenda, teachers (mostly Liberal) will continue the 'education' of our youth.

To quote Henry Kissinger: "Even paranoid people have enemies."

My comment concerns the back/forth about historical leaders, and the accompanying barbs.

Cool it.

Jamo 09-01-2009 02:10 PM

As to issue raised by Roscoe, I don't know...could be good or bad. I do recall Kennedy spending alot of time coming up with ways to make PE a PITA, and somebody kept telling me I'd live if I jumped under my little wooden desk if the bomb was dropped (kept me awake nights cuz there was no way in hell I could fit under my desk).

Obviously, it's going to depend on the content rather than the setting.

Roscoe 09-01-2009 02:17 PM

And stay away from the windows Jamo........

Roscoe

LURK 09-01-2009 02:25 PM

Well.. there's the content, the setting and then there's the messenger. I think one in particular is bugging some of these guys ;)
