Kansas Vs. Missouri Registration?

Will be registering my new cobra within the next few weeks. I live in Kansas but have a home at the Ozarks as well. Any insight on registering/licensing benefits or drawbacks between the two states?

I don't have any knowledge of how Kansas does it, but in MO you are allowed to register replicas as the year and model of car that they replicate (a BIG benefit)

I'll forward your post on to members of the club and see if some of our Kansas members or local replica mfrs can give some input.

What did you end up purchasing?

I'm getting a Backdraft. Flying to Florida next week to choose the engine and options. At this point, I think a 351w crate motor and T5 will be the choice. I'm going to drive the 392 stoker with TKO as well.

My brother tried registering his car at his Lake of the Ozarks home and had some real problems as the car was kept in Kansas. Both the state and the county over there had problems with being deprived of tax revenue. And the taxes were a lot less at Lake of the Ozarks.

I'd keep the car in both places. It would be no different than my Kansas registered truck visiting my lake house from time-to-time just like my cobra visiting my Kansas house now and then.

Here's a response from one of our MACC members, which I received via email:

The registration, title, taxes, and insurance is relative painless in Kansas. Yes, you do have to register it in the year on the certificate of origin for the replica and pay the back taxes (as I had to) since I did not finish it the year of the certificate. The good part is as follows:

First step is to go the the Highway Patrol Dept. in Olathe, with the car, and get the certificate of origin verified to the serial number on your car plus like $10.00 fee. Serial number plate must be steel pop riveted. This is all they care about. No testing of anything like lights, horn, brakes, etc.

Second step is to obtain proof of insurance for the Motor Vehicle Dept. I have mine through State Farm which is very reasonable. You have to have a great driving record, limit the driving of your cobra to 2000 miles or less a year, be an old fart, but I pay like $96.00 every 6 months for $30,000 replacement coverage.

Last step is to take the above information to the Motor Vehicle Dept. (I go to Mission) and present the above info and your receipts from the manufacture. Here is where you have to smarten up. Present the basic receipts of like body, frame, suspension components, steering wheel, engine, and the taxes will be based on that amount. Don't go in there with $35,000 dollars with of receipts. They could care less just as long as each receipt is like page 1 of 1. If it says page 1 of 3 they will request pages 2 and 3!. At a minimum you have to have the Body, Frame, and engine receipt.

Hope this helps and yes Kansas has an issue with a Missouri car in the driveway / garage of a Kansas resident. I know as I work in Missouri and live in Kansas and DID have a Missouri licensed lease car in my driveway. It now has Kansas plates...

Registered in Missouri, no problem. It's registered as a '65. Since I will house the Cobra in Missouri for approximately half the year, I'd prefer not to battle Missouri with a Kansas car parked there. Personalized plate coming: 65CBRA I thought that was more appropriate than JAYHAWK on a Missouri plate!

Nope! I registered in April of 2006, and all they did was look at the VIN plate that my kit manufacturer sent me (Factory 5), and then reviewed my documentation on the VIN of the engine I used (donor Mustang 302). That was it. Very quick and painless. They didn't even ask me do show them headlights, turn signals, brake lights, horn, etc. I don't know what county you live in, but I live in JO Cty. In this county, there is only one inspection station that inspects "Specialty Constructed Vehicles". It's at old 56 Hwy and K-7, just East of "Go Chicken Go". Very small building. If memory serves, they are only there for a few hours 2 or 3 days each week to inspect kit cars.

I realize this thread is over 3 years old, but I am hoping I can get some information on registering a Cobra in Kansas that is currently registered in Texas. It is currently titled and registered as a 1966 Ford. I registered a 1998 Honda Accord in Kansas that was registered in Texas and the only inspection was a VIN inspection by the sherrif's office.

That's my concern....the VIN plate on my Cobra is attached to the dash right at the corner of the windshield on the driver's side, like a standard production car, but the sherrif said he had to find a VIN on the car in two different places to verify the car is in fact the vehicle that is represented by the title. If I don't have two separate VINs, what can I do about that? I don't think the vehicle has a VIN on the frame, but I guess I could get the current VIN stamped onto the frame somewhere......

I'd hate to have to retain my current Texas registration when I move to Kansas....anyone have any ideas?

i have brought two cobras into kansas from out of state and they used the one vin, one had the vin stamped on the frame in the trunk, the other was riveted to the frame under the dash. the two vin deal is bullshat imo, maybe he wanted to see one on the frame. if they get weird, which kansas is anyway, stamp the vin on the frame somewhere, case dismissed.

I spoke with the sherrif's department today (didn't get to speak to the sherrif, though, only the gal who answered the phone) and they told me that the Kansas Department of Public Safety (Highway Patrol) does the inspections on this sort of thing. I'll call them tomorrow.

I like your idea about stamping the VIN on the frame.....just need to find out where to do so. The sherrif said he had a book that told him where the VIN locations are, I'd like to know I put it in the right place!

it's a replica, doesn't matter (in my case) where the vin was, one was stamped on the frame in the trunk because it didn't have a vin when i purchased it, the other had a plate riveted on the frame under the dash, neither one is probably a stock location.

Well, now I have been "passed off" to the Wichita DPS office by the Garden City DPS office.....G.C. has a "specialist" but he's not available today so they gave me the phone number for "Troop F" in Wichita.

All I want to know is where the VIN should be on the frame....the Cobra is registered in TX under the VIN for a 1966 Mustang, so my local sherrif ought to be able to get that information for me, he said he had a book. Soon as I find out where the '66 Mustangs had their VINs stamped, I'll get my stamp set out and get busy.

Well, I just spoke to my local Stanton County sherrif....he remembers me from high school, and we've talked a number of times. He did the VIN inspection on my Honda Accord a year ago.

Good news, he says if the VIN on the dash matches the VIN on the title, there is no need for a second VIN as long as it is as I represented it.

YEE-HAW!!!

He also suggested I get "antique" plates for the car, said it would save me some money. I asked if there is a mileage restriction for antique plates and he said "No".

Looks like things are looking up
