Default Engine Oil Question

Just bought a superformance with a roush 327r in it...i want to change all the fluids and do some routine maintanance...the engine started life with with 20-50 dynosaur oil in it and then after a time the previous owner changed to 10-30 conventional...question...?...should i be using 20-50 (or was that some kind of break in ritual) or the 10-30 and it has been using conventional oil and can i switch to synthetic since it is all the other cars...

What type of cam are you running? Flat tappet, hydraulic??? If flat tappet, then stick with dino oil like Brad Penn with a high zinc content. If it's a hydraulic then use what ever you like.

Both Roush and Redline are producing 10W-30 synthetic oil with higher ZDDP levels. The Redline is 1200 PPM. I know the Redline number is accurate since I sent it out for analysis. For reference Mobil1 10W-30 is 800 PPM.

For Redline oil www.hrpworld.com

Avoid the racing oils.

Roush website indicates non-synthetic for first 3k miles 10W30. I recommend valvoline VR-1 but since you have roller lifters use valvoline 10w30 if you prefer.

The car has 14xxx miles on it if that helps anyone out btw. Do you know how long it has been on non-synthetic? I dunno it that helps or whatever, but I know mom would be upset if you had to replace the motor, but at least it wouldnt be me breaking something!

I use the Mobil 1 15w-50 in my flat tappet small block. The ZDDP level of that oil is 1200 ppm. 23,000 miles later no oil issues.

I had a Motorcycle cam go flat a short while ago, I was running high spring pressure. There again, oil is probably to blame.

I have been told by a tribologist (oil expert, snake oil expert) that Royal Purple is a 2nd tier oil. He likes Redline, Amsoil, (1st tier) products for synthetic oil. But he uses dino oil for his cars. It's about preferences and what works for your driving conditions/car etc. etc. Good luck.
