Already registered but want an SB100

This is a new one, I was under the impression that once a car has been registered it's done with no looking back for the SB-100 at a later date. It would be great if it works out for you.

Nope.. thats not the case. The office manager even called Sacramento to verify. He said mine was a really easy one to deal with.

Get there early..............like I said in the previous post. Depending on how important it is to you, I would get there before 3:AM. I got there at 10 PM the night before only to fine another guy sleeping in front of the door ( and it wasn't a transient!)
The guidelines change every year. Who knows what might happen next year. The SB WILL disappear, it's just a matter of when! Tom

I went to the Santa Clara DMV last year, and getting there at 10 pm, or 3 am or even 5 am wouldn't have given you any extra advantage in securing an SB100 cert (just more time to think about how much coffee you drank and how long you'll have to wait to hit the head ).

I think I got there around 6:00 am and the DMV didn't open up until 9:00 am that particular day. If you go to the right office and they work with all of the SB 100 applicants as a group, you shouldn't have any problems at all. As others have mentioned, the soft econonmy might ease the demand this year.

Yes, I beat Doug and was first in line at Santa Clara last year. I think I got there around 5:00-5:15 AM. Not only was I not the first person to receive my SB100 # (I was nearly last in the group), but the DMV had a paperwork snafu and mixed up my paperwork with another SB100 attendee. Personally, I would show up about 60-90 minutes before the opening, since many DMV's will handle all the people in line in one big phone call to Sacramento.

Again, make sure your TIN #'s match and all your personal information like name, address, phone number, etc. are correct. I have visited the DMV so many times this year that I'm thinking of asking them for an office.

In fact, I was there this morning. AGAIN. The VIN on the title and registration did not match the vehicle VIN by ONE LETTER. When I finished my registration about a month ago, the DMV person input the incorrect VIN #. Hopefully, it's all done now. Knock on wood.

Doug, while law enforcement hopefully will not mess with any of us. The fact that that your car can be towed for a fix-it ticket is real. An example is that if your oil pan is lower than the bottom of your rim height which is a simple fix-it ticket. Added to that cite is 24002cvc, unsafe vehicle, which orders the driver to immediately take the car to a repair station or park it within a reasonable time from the date and time of the issuing of the cite. The next time the car is seen moving without the violation being corrected, the car can and probably will be hooked.

As far as registration goes, a cite for expired reg is also a fix-it cite of sorts. But, wait six months and the vehicle code states "must take", which leaves discretion out of the quotient.

For things like excessive noise, you can be cited (and in Monterey will be) for simply cruising in a low gear making about 100 db or less ( I can’t remember the max Db level....93, 97, somewhere around that). It has nothing to do with the fact you're driving a replica or smog exempt vehicle. Many out there think because it's a copy of a '65 it falls under the rules of a '65.

Were able to run some of the equipment we do because law enforcement generally WANTS to look the other way because most of us are not hooligans...well maybe I am, a little! There are numerous violations on these cars as soon as they hit the street. Just drive up to an officer and say "you can't touch my car because it's had all the inspections and besides, it's a "65", and see what happens. I don't think in '65 you were required to run a front plate in Ca. but you are now and so is replica of a '65.

I hope this answers your question. I may have overstated things a little. I just feel lucky to be here and still able to own one of these cars knowing what I know.

Sorry........on the loud pipes, there's excessive noise and modified exhaust. The burden of proof falls on the owner to prove the (over100 db) pipes he's running are not modified. In that case, stand by to jump through some whoops. No officer knows everything about the exhaust system you have on your car, therefore, modified exhaust would seem logical if the car was extreemly loud compared to what he has to compare it to. The court would then decide the course of action................sucks , doesn't it.

I like your thoughts and they're certainly a gentle reminder with these beasts that we are always on a slippery slope while on the street with the rest of the unitiated humanity and could get pulled over at any time. If I live long enough to wear this one out maybe I'll call you to see if I can move in with you long enough to register my next car. However, by then SMOG FREE motors will probably make 1000 HP on wesson oil! tom
