You're probably tired of hearing from me, but S.B. 5585 Custom Car Registration reached the WA House Transportation Committee. Please contact as many Committee members as possible from the list. At least contact the Chair and 2 Vice Chairs. DO NOT CONTACT REP. FRED FINN. He has a personal vendetta out for collector cars. He introduced bills to first eliminate collector car plates and later to reduce the 30 year old window to 40 years old. I'm afraid if he gets a wiff of our bill he may be trouble. In your calls/letters note the unanimous Senate approval 48-0. If we can get this out of Committee I think we're home free. THANK YOU!!

Default We're on the Home Stretch!!

The WA SEMA Bill passed out of the House Transportation Committee yesterday!!! We're 90% of the way home now. Steve McDonald from SEMA is pushing the Rules Committee to get it to a floor vote by the House soon. That's the last step before the Gov signing it. Please call/e mail your local state representatives to vote for SB5585. I'm going to be out of the country for a couple of weeks so please sign on to http://www.semasan.com/san/join.aspx to keep you up to date on final help needed to finish this. THANKS!
Dave

Looks like SB 5585 passed the House. It's now on to the Governor for signature.

Good news for you guys. What was up with Rep. Brad Klippert, the only nay vote. I googled his bills and WOW. With his conservative record, why did he oppose the SEMA bill?? ......Ron

Don't they have a "tradition" to have at least one nay vote for the little stuff and save the zero nay's for the big votes like higher taxes or going to war? Just guessing! Washington can't declare war on Oregon, right? I think we could whip 'em though....LOL!

THANKS TO ALL YOU WA Cobra guys! Your letters/calls really do make a difference. Thanks especially to Jake for rallying Seattle area support. As noted this bill is effective Oct. 1. I would advise those interested in titling/retitling to print out the final bill from http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summ...2011&bill=5585

The operative clause for retitling is p. 3, Section 5:
"A vehicle registration issued to a street rod or custom vehicle under this chapter need not be an initial vehicle registration for that vehicle."

I assume the exact procedure for retitling will have to be worked out with DOL before Oct. 1, but may include vehicle inspection or at least proof of year/make of replicated vehicle. My guess is this can't be done at your local licensing office, but will require an appointment with an inspector/ specialist. Also as noted if you choose this option use is limited to car club activities and occasional pleasure driving. As long as you don't use your Cobra as a daily commuter shouldn't be a problem. You will be issued a collector car plate for a one time fee of $35. No more stinkin smog tests and waivers!
Once again THANK YOU!

Correct me if I'm wrong. I have a Cobra titled as a 1998 which I currently have to run "regular" plates on (would require inspection but I licensed it with a Fox Island/emissions exempt address). I also have a 1938 Chevrolet which is titled as a 1938. The previous owner ran "regular/vanity" plates. No inspection, no restrictions on driving anywhere but you have to buy tabs every year. I had period correct (1938) plates put on it. Again, no inspection but restricted where you drive as you aren't paying for tabs each year, but at any rate if you retitle to 60's, no inspection and you have your choice of "regular" or historic/period correct plates.

You are correct mastiff. If you want to drive your car to work everyday you must get standard plates and buy tabs every year. The way most of us drive our Cobras it is fine to run a collector plate. The side benefit besides one time registration is that it is legal to run a single plate.

Mine is already registered as a 65 and it's great not to have to worry about smog checks, yearly renewal, front plate etc. I see collector plates on a lot of beater daily drivers. I don't know if they have any problems with law enforcement or not. Hopefully other states will pull their heads out and adopt the same SEMA legislation as ours. Ca. should take note as this is how it really should be done and do away with those 500 Mickey Mouse certificates.

I agree JWD! This has been a long time waiting. It also makes your car much more easy to sell if it is registered as a 1965.

Easier to sell except to someone in Ca. They won't accept one LEGALLY titled elsewhere as a 65. They don't care what other states do because they're "special".

A Big thanks to all of you who helped make this happen-I'm going for the collect plate once October rolls around-just not running a front plate (legally) makes it worth it-as if I would ever stick one up front!
