COX6xxx and COB6xxx Cobras (leaf spring chassis) for the UK and European markets. COX/COB cars maintain much more British content, i.e. wiring and elecrtrtical components, than for example the CSX2201 through CSX2589 roadsters which had the most American hardware for example. Park a bone stock COX/COB car right next to a stock CSX car and you will find many small part and installation differences.

European coil spring cars but with a 289 motor had the cob and cox prefixes.
COX for LH drive AC`S and COB for RH drive. Started at 6101 till 6132
The transverse leaf spring European cars also COB and COX for the same reason started at 6001 till 6062

Oops forgot them. Ned is probably getting a nasty e-mail ready right now.

AC Cars sold them, coil spring cars set up for 289s, as AC 289Sports models after Ford and Shelby lost interest in AC Cars. I don't think the production or sales literature mentions the word Cobra. Not every Ford powered AC was called a Cobra by AC Cars. The RS2.6 models had a six cylinder Ford engine and were made before Cobra production started and for a while at the same time as "Cobras". As far as that goes not every coil spring car in this series even got a factory installed engine. Some were sold without engines and the first owner had to finish the drive train. COX6126 for example, was sold new and shipped to the USA less engine and transmission. Holman-Moody was given the task of outfitting the car with a 427 Ford engine.

Some AC 289 Sports owners call their cars Cobras and some don't taking the position that they are just the next model of AC because they weren't part of the Shelby/Ford/AC contracts.

Hi

I am new to this forum and cobras. I have been offered a car which has a COX5*** VIN. Can someone give me an idea of where to find some information about these cars. Someone told me only 12 were built with this VIN. What price range would be resonable for the shell only and a complete unit? How do I found out what engine it should have in it?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Darren

COX and COB numbers 6001 - 6062 were built between 1963 and 1965. They weren't built due to lack of interest from Ford or Shelby.
An interesting note; AC used one frame number twice. I'm sure there's a story behind that but I've haven't heard it as of yet.

Larry

They were produced in a completed form and sold directly by AC to buyers in the UK and countries other than the US.

Short answer: AC Cars went into receivership in 1996. When purchased from the receivers in '96 the new owners had intentions to continue building the MKIV and other models. The name Cobra could no longer be used, as Ford owned it. Between 1996 & 2002 a few aluminum-bodied cars were produced that were called "427 MK III". Some as rolling chassis and some complete. After 2002 they were only rolling chassis. Twelve cars are listed from COB5001 to COB5012. The cars are identified in the SAAC World Registry

If you are in the US, I would guess there would be 'issues' in trying to import these cars.

Only a guess, but I would suspect the value range would be close to a MkIV with a similar drive train

True as COB cars were for Great Britain (hence the "B") and COX for export other than GB (but not the U.S.).
What does the "O" stand for though?

i think the default was COB******
when the cobra was exprted to europe etc it was easy to put in a X for export.
and for shelby cars, the Carrol Shelby eXport or Cobra Shelby Export was used as the logical 3 letter acronym, although i believe the provenance is arguable.

Just for clarity, CSX did not stand for Carroll Shelby Export. ;)

LMH 02-08-2010 07:17 PM

As far as I know, CSX stands for Cobra Shelby Export.
I just haven't been able to find out what "O" stands for.

CSX = Carroll Shelby Experimental

COB = Cobra Great Britain

COX = Cobra Export outside Great Britain

Sorry, but it appears you are trying to rewrite history. Perhaps the best alternative is to buy or borrow and read the SAAC World Registry for clarification. Page 49 would be a good starting point in the 2008 edition. Now, if you prefer to go back to the 1997 editions, try page 37 that gives the full explanation of the A, B, C prefix used by AC Cars.

A-Snake 02-08-2010 07:48 PM

Or I forgot, in case you'd prefer the UK version you may want to read "Cobra - the first 40 years" by Trevor Legate. Review page 53. ;)

If you know the answer, why don't you just post it up for us instead of telling us to buy the Registry????? Or is it "top secret?" :rolleyes:

Let's try it again:

CSX = Cobra Shelby Export (meant for USA)

COB = Cobra Britain

COX = Cobra Export (meant for other than Britain)

A-Snake 02-08-2010 10:04 PM

Larry had already posted the correct answer. Your post made me assume that you did not believe him. :)
