ARE the 5 FIA cars and maybe some comp cars the only Mrk II cars with flares?

Not sure exactly what you mean but if you look through the gallery you'll see a number of slabside comp cars with extended flares. The five FIA cars were the only to have that type of flare & cutback doors.

They would pound or extend the slab flares to accomodate wider tires on the early comp cars. There were no more cars, to my knowledge with the FIA flares

As far as I know, the factory 289's with the "wide hips" were the FIA cars. There were flared fender cars from the factory as Hyde said, some which were flared slab sides.
2142 has flared rear fenders but still the flat portion on the lip.

This one obviously Looks to have been changed a little over the years with the Front Flares being more in the 427 shape & the rear flares really exaggerated.

This looks like a home made Flare Conversion with the rear flares being pounded out with a ball peen hammer

This is about my Favorite 289 look with the natural front flares & the Clean looking extended flares. If ERA had the slabside project back then I would have done this type of car for sure!!!

& one of the original FIA's

& of course....

Just had to add this one because I think it's one of the coolest cars there is. Check out the rear flare and those Dunlop wheels!

Hyde, don't forget the USRRC cars too................they too were like the FIA cars.

Tire technology and rule changes forced the widening of the original fenders to cover the tires then stylists became involved and made more subtle flowing curves which are hard to beat.

I thought I read somewhere here that they used to beat the fenders out to fit their new tires when racing, using a hammer and a phonebook as a dolly.

I assumed someone would pipe up about the USRRC cars. Anyone have pictures of these? I'm not real familiar with them & kinda assumed they had a more "427" style rear fender.

In frame 14 (blue car) it appears that there is a screen wrapped around the IDA's??? If screens, maybe to prevent pebbles from being ingested (?)
