Default 427 emblems on chrome pent roofs

On most of the Cobras we build now, the owners glue a 427 fender emblem on the valve covers when they use chrome pent roofs. I don't believe that the engines came from Ford this way. Did Shelby American equip new 427 cars with these emblems?

Yes, but the exact placement on the valve covers appears to have been very non-precise or they got re-arranged during the early life of the car. There have been previous posts on this subject that you may be able to pull up with a search.

Dan
I searched without any luck.
My problem with your answer is that I've yet to see a period photo showing them. They may exist, though, and I'm hoping someone can post some. Most of the cars have been restored, passed through multiple hands, etc., and are far from original. I'd just like to see some kind of period documentation vs what we all feel may be right.

The emblems were made for Shelby, they have a Shelby part # on them. Shelby installed the emblems on the side of the car and on the pentroofs.

I have seen and have on file numerous period photos of 427 cars, showing the placement of the emblems, and when I bought my car from the anal retentive original owner, this is where they were also.

Emblems on everything I've seen form the period were placed on the front of the cover, nearest to the expansion tank for the radiator.

Here is one old one - although not the one I'm remembering. It seems to show mixed application of the emblems - some did and some didn't. I'll keep searching.

Computerworks' post in your link seems to me to support naked pentroofs as original. With the exception of the late-'67 reference, period cars photographed showed no badges. The rest are more modern references, which may have been added by later owners. Of course, Shelby could have begun adding them later in production. They changed a lot of stuff, why not the badges?

Yes, Shelby part numbers do appear on the badges. But they were used on the fenders of all the big block cars, so this fact alone doesn't necessarily support their use on valve covers. Also, I've never seen a NOS badge that did not have the pins, or have them broken off, so to my way of thinking they were originally intended for fender usage. Of course, neither of these facts rule out their use on valve covers by Shelby American, either. You mentioned having numerous period photos showing the badges. Can you dig up and post any of them?

Could be - probably the only thing standardized in Shelby's production line process - was the lack of standardization. I couldn't find the post I was remembering - it dealt with whether the emblems were mounted in any particular location on the chrome pentroof covers.

Has anyone given thought to the fact that limited high-temp adhesives in the '60's and early '70's, combined with high temp engine compartments and considerable rattling/shaking of the cobra chassis, may have resulted in many "factory applied" badges to simply come off on their own? Silicone adhesives were available then, but not at the performance levels that are available today (unless you had connections with the aerospace industry, which was entirely possible for Carroll in '60's era El Segundo/Torrance, CA).
