Which kind of cables were used on the CSX2000 cobras? (optical point of view)

- Standard PVC cables


- braided cables


Especially the USRRC cars would be of interest for me.

Street cars CSX2000 through CSX2200 received English textile braided cover wiring of the period. Street cars CSX2201 through CSX2589 received American specification Ford (i.e. Ford supplier) extruded seamless elastomeric wiring insulation of the period. (An exception is the Lucas DR3 windshield wiper drives always had English wiring pigtails.) By 1964 most SAI team Cobras were fitted with bulk aircraft wire and ancillaries of the period, most of it white in color. Factory images show cars while being wired. Wire was pulled from bulk coils, sufficient numbers of wires were strung, the wires bundled, and terminated as required to fit. Some of details like this can be found in the various books published using factory photos and or the photo collections posted on The Henry Ford site.

UK-assembled cars, or more specifically cars with harnesses installed at Thames Ditton, would have had predominantly braided cotton cable insulation covering, assembled by Lucas into a black cotton-braided harness. There were some exceptions in that some cables were pvc covered. General wires were 14/0.25 (or 0.30), but other unprotected circuits such as headlamps etc. were heavier gauge. Most connections were by crimped or soldered bullets, but the design of these has changed very slightly recently.

AC Cars installed the chassis wiring in all street cars and the early race cars. The designs, materials, and sources were different up to CSX2200 and CSX2201 onward but AC did the installations.

It was the later SAI team cars that went racing with SAI race shop installed custom for each car aircraft wiring.
