Default Making a fiberglass hood look like an original underneath

Is it possible? To modify a glass hood to appear like an original aluminum hood? Any pics I can use as reference?

Maybe someday I'll have an aluminum hood made

Thanks
Bill D

Hi Bill,

Try this thread....

underhood coating: metal spray? aluminum oxide coating?

There might also be others.

Cheers
Glen

Bill,

Metalmorphus had a thread on here a couple of years ago about adhering aluminum to the underside of a hood. I think that others have done it as well. Not sure if that is what you are referring to, or if you are looking for some kind of coating.

You could make a tube frame, then attach a fiberglass hood skin to it. Original hoods are painted, so unless you want the look of bare aluminum, there's really no need for aluminum in either sheet or spray coating.

I just attached a sheet of polished aluminum to the inside of my hood.

Keeping it polished is part of the joy of owning cars like this.

Someone on this forum a couple of years ago did a very detailed and well pictured description of removing the molded reinforcement from the back of a fiberglass hood, bonding on an aluminum sheet, adding the tube frame and then adding an aluminum flange around and riveted to the tube frame.

It looked fantastic.

Cheers

Thanks guys. You've very helpful. One more question; was the hoop riveted in the back near the windshield? I know the front was riveted to the hoop

Kind of hard to explain w/o photos but there's a flat rim of aluminum around the whole tube frame. It's rolled into the edge of the hood and riveted to the tube. I can probably post photos later this evening when I'm home.
