Default Original luggage rack

I know this will produce various references and links to old posts about the original AMCO luggage rack on the 289 and 427 Cobra's and I think I have looked at most of them.

And I know Nick Acton has one for sale on his website.

But i was looking for two things.

1) an imaged copy of a Shelby or AMCO catalogue showing the luggage rack,

and

2) didn't someone in a build post replicate their own from an original AMCO luggage rack and post their build process? Are dimensioned drawings available?

Looking forward to your responses.

Cheers
Greg

Ron Randall of Metal-Morphous did the replication of my original luggage rack. It is found in this thread on page 10, starting with post # 197.

The making of a 427 Narrow Hip Cobra starts now!!

Thanks John-O. I'll ping NOS-EDDIE and Metal-morphous to see if the'll share the luggage rack dimensions.

Cheers

The AMCO number for the correct 289 Luggage rack is AMCO #5234. I had an original NOS in the box and it matched exactly the original on my CSX 2149. I sold the rack years ago.

Thanks Jim. I'm working the net pretty hard trying to find an AMCO catalogue.

I'm assuming the rack was the same for the 427.

If anyone has a catalogue and could image the page for me with the Cobra luggage rack, I would certainly appreciate it.

Cheers
Greg

It doesn't happen to be the same one used on the 356 Porsche, does it?
They come up for sale quite often but don't usually have an AMCO number on them.

You might try searches under the full company name and not just the trade name of the products. Perhaps some of the vintage literature dealers might have something.

American Carry-Products Company, Inc.

I have not seen a catalog published by them but multiple accessory mail order supply companies featured AMCO products. The Haan catalogs show luggage, roof, and ski racks for several types of cars but not Cobras.

Hi Larry. Are you saying the "correct" luggage rack will have a part number on it?

The part number (5234) that Jim has posted?

Or are we saying the luggage racks that are posted for sale usually don't quote AMCO part numbers?

Cheers

Greg, I just went out to the "Cobra boudoir" and checked and there is no part number on the rack. What Jim was referring to was the original box had a part number. Good luck in your quest. You mentioned Nick Acton has one. Search Results : Acton Custom Enterprises, Custom Metal for Cobras

A little pricey, but if you really want one, welll. After all they are hen's teeth.

I mean the luggage racks posted for sale don’t usually state any part numbers. I asked a friend who’s a 356 expert about AMCO racks for 356’s and he said since they’re all aftermarket, there is no official luggage rack for 356 models, in concours terms anyway.
Since they are aftermarket, he’s not sure if 5234 units fit 356’s or not. I just noticed in a couple photos online, the racks look very similar.

Several rack models look similar. The 1964 and 1965 Haan catalogs show part numbers and pictures for several cars but not Cobras.

I have purchased racks advertised as 356 racks and they have been correct. The hard part is the proper "feet" for the rack to set on.

Yep! I'm machining a set out of stainless, at least until I give up and buy a set from Nick!

So what's a used AMCO 5234 luggage rack worth?

Isn't it always:

Quantity (there aren't many)
and
Quality (vary wildly).

Turns out my 356 friend has one and may want to sell it. I don’t want him to get taken to the cleaners of course. I’m not sure what it has for mounts either, I was just curious what it might be worth.

My luggage rack "garage find" should be on it's way to me today. Looking forward to receiving it next week and inspecting its condition, polishing it up and setting it on the boot lid to see if I like the look.

The luggage rack looks cool on the many pics I've seen posted, but got to see it in real life to be sure.

Much of the chrome hardware (the carriage bolts and spacers) are available at my local ACE hardware, but the angled "feet" are as yet elusive ( I haven't heard from Nick Acton if he'll sell them separately) so I have a temporary fix (kind of funky) that I'll share with you next week (if it works)

Stay tuned.

Cheers
Greg

I have an original with all of the original mounting hardware. It is not for sale but I can provide photos of details.

Hi CompClassics.

Any and all pics of the luggage rack hardware posted on this forum would be appreciated.

Or you can PM me and I'll post them.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers
Greg
