Default Glove Box Hinge Pictures for 427

I'm reproducing a 427 glovebox door I have all the hinge and construction info for size, width, etc but does anyone have a picture of how the hinge was attached to the glovebox lid/dash? Was it simply screwed straight up into the bottom of the door or did they notch the wood and counter sink it a bit?

I have every other possible photo of the glovebox lid and strap except for that one shot.

Hi Apex speed.

I used a piece of fiberglass sheet (1/8" I think) from McMaster Carr and "countersunk it and notched it. Here are a few pics;

Thanks. However I believe the original design had 1/16" aluminum on the front, a 3/8" wood core, and 1/16" aluminum on the black for a total of 1/2"

The piano hinge is supposed to be 205MM wide and approximately 1 to 1 1/6" open. Supposedly the catch that holds the door closed is just a simple metal tab that friction fits against the top of the dash when closed.

I'm just not clear how the hinge fits into that "sandwich" per the original setup. Hopefully I can under that last detail as I'm building it tomorrow evening.

Nice thread, I am watching. It came at the perfect time, because my client wants a glove box - and I try to persuade him not to!

This is for another car with a painted dash and he wants no visible screws or rivets. And I'm not painting the dash again, which is a part of the body (like on a beetle).

A pic of the Backdraft standard glove-box on my car. I am not a fan of the white plastic magnetic catch and have since replaced it with a black one. Excuse the filter boxes...

Thanks. BDR hides the hinge quite well. I never took a detailed shot of the glove box.

Thanks for the input. We fabricated the CSX "correct" glove box door last night. It was quite the project and I think it turned out well. It just needs to be covered and piped. The car is 1/2" oak that is tapered to fit in the opening better with the 205MM long 1 1/6" piano hinge counter sunk into the front face of the door. The door then gets a wafer thin piece of aluminum bonded to the front of it (no real reason to have it but the original cars did). The back also gets a thin piece of aluminum that does serve a purpose..it gets wrapped in material to hide the seams from where the material on the front is wrapped around to the back.

I have the original 427 glovebox handle. But will be changing out the style of hardware for the handle and door strap (keeps it from flopping open) to nickel plated screws in trim washers as the original setup looks pretty crude.

Now off to find a reasonably correct looking latch.

On 427 street cars, the pull shown in My427Cobra's photos is correct.

Both Acton Cobra and Cobra Restorers have the right one. They are $90-100. I got mine from Restorers before I noticed that Acton was $10 cheaper.

I don't know if 427 glove boxes were of the same construction as 289s, but after studying COB6029 and with help from Dan Case and Luke on the ACOC forum, I think I have mine just about correct.
The glove box door is of plywood, with a chromed brass hinge running along the bottom. One leaf of this is fixed to the outer face of the bottom of the glove box door using countersunk-head rivets, so sits vertically when the glove box lid is closed. This is hidden by the cotton wadding and the leather covering (not sure if 427s had leather or not). The other leaf of the spring is fixed to the aluminium dashboard glove box hole return, so sits horizontally when the glove box is closed. This is attached by 4BA screws, internal tooth washers and nuts, from memory - Dan has the details.
I found a hinge manufacturer in Birmingham who supplied the motor industry many years ago, who made some to order for me. The company is Gold & Wassall, Birmingham, England.
Luke kindly sent me some photos of an original 289 glove box his firm had restored, so credit to him for these:

Cobra Restorer's, Branda or Finishline would be my starting point!

The 289 key unit is not used on the 427, your lucky as they are not cheap.
