Lucas 104

Hi All

I managed to pick this up the other day and would like to know if anyone can tell me if the Lucas 104 mirror would have been used on the Mid range COB61 cars, The AC289 Sports assuming thats it's an Original Lucas 104 mirror :JEKYLHYDE

Dash Mirror

Based on my single sample of one unrestored chassis COX6126 that I have pictures of the "No. 104" mirror stem was used at least once.

The "No. 104" stem was used in multiple mirror assemblies. There was a version of shorter height "No. 103" that was combined with a much smaller mirror glass than AC Cars used as far as I can tell.

The typical CSX2xxx chassis got fitted with some version of Lucas® mirror assembly using a No. 104 stem. Mirrors were not typically installed for shipment to the U.S.A. so the shop doing final assembly had to install them. The mirror kits Lucas sold retail did not have attachment fasteners with them or at least none of the new old stock kits I have seen included fasteners. That probably explains why different trim screws and hex nuts were used among shops and over time.

Same chassis range, at least three designs of glass holder were used. The beyond early chassis the design of holder most used could have either of two finishes: plated or camera case wrinkle black paint.

Same chassis range, there were mirror glasses with different colors of back side finish. Lucas sold versions of assemblies with flat and curved glass. I personally have not seen a curved glass mirror in a substantially as built unrestored car.

Early street CSX31xx chassis continued with assemblies using the No. 104 stem, CSX3107 for example. At some point late in production the No. 104 stem was replaced with a different model with a goose neck type shape, CSX3346 for example. The typical glass holder was the most common version used in pictures I have was like most CSX2xxx chassis in black camera case wrinkle type paint.

I have a couple of the more elaborate three prong style triangular mirror mounts attached to #104 posts. Something I noted of the two assemblies is that the base of the #104 posts are slightly different. Also the back of the mirror glass are painted flat black and not the crinkle black of the later mirrors.

We’re reproducing these, so sit tight! I’ll post a couple photos when I can.
Trust me when I say, they aren’t a half-assed knock off!

I'll do a separate thread once everything is set and ready to go. Sorry for the hijack morgy!

No worries Mate.. Always good to know of good reproduction parts..

They have been reproduced previously as well, with the fixing clamp and glass. The person that did them in SoCal stoped doing them many years ago.

Larry, for the 104, could you tell us the centre line distance between the mounting holes? And will they take 2BA, or need something smaller?
Thanks,
Roger

John, the problem with those, the ball was waay undersized vs OE. It would cause mirror to flop around or, if tightened to correct that, would crack the mirror. These are correct in every way.

Jeff, do you know the diameter of the correct ball? And would you happen to know the spacing of the mounting holes?

BERNIE 08-08-2019 01:18 PM

Holes spacing : 32 mm, ball diameter :13.12 mm

Bernie

Larry, inbox is full!

CompClassics 08-09-2019 07:44 AM

I’ll have to measure the originals that I have against the repoped one I’ve had laying around.

LMH 12-15-2019 06:55 PM

Sorry Morgy but I'm going to hijack your thread again! Since I already posted on here earlier about the 104 post reproduction, I figured I'd show you guys the clamp Jeff just finished. This had to go through a number of revisions and die changes to get this exactly correct but the finished product is outstanding!

If anyone is interested in purchasing, send Jeff an email. I don't know anything about price but he can fill you in. The glass mirror itself is up to you. We don't want to get into cutting and shipping glass as it's too easy to have a local shop to you cut one. jeffc@tangodown.com

Got mine today, thanks chaps, and I have to tell you these are great. They look terrific and the mirror stays in place very nicely. No more bearing adhesive stuck on the ball for me...

Really nice work, Jeff, you should be proud of these!

Roger
