rear diff

I think the rear covers were black. John (compclassics) had a thread a while back about correct covers and correct location of drain plugs and I seem to remember every cover was black. Every original cover I’ve seen has been black.
Anyway, Roger, did you coat the inside of your differential as well?
I wonder if the cases were dipped back then?

Next time I'm in there I'll do the rear cover black! Now I think of it, I knew that but failed to do it the right colour.
No, it was shipped fully assembled and I didn't want to mess with the bearings so I painted the outside only.

Hey guys I think the red oxide was a foundry thing. After the foundry cleaned them up the whole casting was painted. This was to keep them from rusting while they were waiting around to be machined. At least this is what I have been told about 9 inch fords. They might of done the same for the ac castings.

I went out into the barn with a solvent rag to clean up a small spot on a early jag pumpkin. I cant find my camera but it is red oxide. When I say red oxide I am saying it is a brown with a hint of red. The electrical motor winding paint is much more red. In the picture you posted the color looks good but that's looking at it on my screen.

I chose a red with a brown tint so it looks a little darker than red oxide primer.
