Default Original 1965/66 Sunburst wheel pics

Hi all. Here are pics of the original 1965/66 Sunburst wheels:

1) the front of the wheel

2) the back of the wheel

3) more pics of the hab face

4) some pics of the Sunburst "ribs" (note the casting "quality")

Compare these pics of the original 1965/66 Sunburst wheels with the current Rocket Sunburst wheels, and while you will see the similarities, the Rocket wheel is quite different. I like them.

Great reproduction, but different.

Cheers

Hi Dan Case. You asked: Do they hold air? One of the wheels for CSX3298 had an inner tube inside the tire because of pores (lots of them) all the way through an area in the rim.

I've had my original Sunbursts on my car since 2007. I guess I've been lucky because I've had no problems. A little leak at the bead (fixed) because of some corrosion caused by the tire mounting lubricant/sealant (????) and one bad valve stem seal.

But no porosity leakage or cracking.

Cheers
Greg

That's good. 1960s castings of anything could be porous. I had a very porous COBRA intake once. One of the rocker arm covers on our red car has a porous spot between two fins and weeps oil a tiny amount that is easy to keep wiped off.

I have an original set on my car (that were actually take offs from Lewis Hamilton's Cobra) and they hold very well. I've had them on for about 4 1/2 years now and drive the car 500 to 1000 miles per year. Yes they are a very rough cast but they certainly complete the correct look of my car.

Those wheels, if I am not mistaken, are cast Magnesium. The modern wheels are cast Aluminum. The two materials are extremely different in metalurgical qualities and cast very differently. Aluminum makes a much finer casting than does Magesium.

An easy test to determine if the wheel is magnesium:
On an inconspicuous spot, put a drop of vinegar. It if bubbles up=magnesium. voila

Hi Dan and Karl. The original Sunburst wheels were designed by Peter Brock, and manufactured by Kelsey Hayes in cast aluminum.

Does anybody have a scan (pointcloud or CAD model) of the wheels or can create one?

Hi Wigly. There is a fellow on e-bay that 3d prints 1/8th scale model parts (webers, engines, wheels etc). At one time I recall he did the Sunburst wheels.

He may have a scan.

Cheers

Hi Greg, oh ok, i will try to find him. But you do not know if the things are just modeled or based on real scans of the parts?

Hi Greg,

his name is Mike, really nice guy. But the wheels are not scanned. He builds all of the 3D models from scratch using visual references.

But if you would share a couple of dimensions with me, i would rebuild the wheel in CAD. Would you do that?

Hi Wigly. Sorry for the slow response but life gets in the way.

Can you be more specific about the pics you want.

And I would hesitate to give any measurements that you might feed into a CAD program as I don't have the precision measuring equipment to make such.precision measurements.

But give me more info so i can see if i can help.

Cheers
Greg
