289 cars: Slots and holes on top of the body between the engine bay and the cabin
I’ve been pouring over pictures of USRRC cars, specifically CSX2431 which I saw in person, and CSX2557 which I found online.
CSX2431 is on top. This is Ken Miles’ car with the small windscreen. I had assumed that these slots and holes were for the standard windscreen. Alas, on CSX2557 it has the same holes despite that car having the standard street/FIA style windscreen.
What are these yellow highlighted slots and holes? Are the red highlighted holes for a mirror that’s no longer on the car?

Defroster's vents, more than likely, there were there, from the stock AC bodies, as most came here to be street cars, and just never got around to covering or deleting them. At that time, they were building Race Cars as fast as possible.

The center one looks too far back for mirror but I also don't recall a split window config where that would be a support

The yellow circled holes are for windshield defrosters. https://iconicparts.com/heater-998.html
The red circled holes are for the rear view mirror.
You can also see a hole next to the wiper arm attachment. That was a for a windshield washer nozzle.

At one stage in 2431's life, Ken used one of those centre holes for a mirror...
Incidentally, some those USRRC cars had great looking dash layouts

Ditto to what was said above. You have to remember that these started out from the factory as street cars and then were converted to race cars. iN the final race configuration each car differed depending on the crew that as adapting it to race.

Center holes are for the lower windscreen bracket, mirror holes would be further back.

Rear view mirror was mounted on the cockpit tube.

Isn't that museum a great place? I went every few months. There's quite a bit of historic stuff behind the cars on the floor and hanging on the walls too

I think these were where the front vents would attached with hoses to the defroster cut outs brushing the air across the dash for aerodynamics....
The washer nozzle holes just inside the wiper mounts were used to avoid making this all a vacuum. |
