 Hello, 
 Great pictures of that project. 
 I would say it was never a "cobra" or and Ace but the chasis was from an AC Aceca ( the coupe). They have a different differential mounting from the Ace wich had the diff housing welded right into the chassis, the Aceca had a rubber mounted one more like the  CSX / COB / COX series but the structure around it is somewhat different in the end. Here is the back of a 1955 Aceca.
   
 Yours Looks like it was a better idea than the pictures of a T bucket hot rod built on a 289 chassis that I saw once
