Paul, I think that I got them at Auto Zone off of the rack. I had to cut them down along the sides to get them to fit.

Dashboard

Larry

I scavenged CC for information and then made the dash to suit my car, will post pictures soon, but I reckon its quite original, and this is only my preference but I am using vinyl topping which is deck cover grain vinyl as used in 1960's classic cars like AC Cobra, E type Jaguar etc and the important point for my build it doesnt have padding or foam under it! Also with the topping I peel the fabric back off it so it is easier to manipulate and stretch when glueing to the dashboard.

I built a cobra in 1990 and the dash is still perfect after seeing a bit of sun etc with the tonneau cover topping vinyl. Computerworks etc have posted numerous good picts of different dashboards and the central gauges are quite close together, and there are some plans on dashboard posts which dimensions dont make sense.

We used a volt meter instead of amps.
Clock instead of oil temp.
Fan toggle switch instead of auto sensor. (The extra one above the dash light knob, as seen on some CSX cars)

Larry, a couple points on these photos under the assumption that you are shooting for originality accuracy. The dash depicted here appears to be cushioned or kind of puffy. This was not the case on originals. Originals were not cushioned as this one. Also, Autometer gauges with Made in the USA have a nice original look but hard to be exact with these gauges if this is what you are shooting for.

1 Padded dash my idea.
2 AutoMeters my choice.

You are right of course.

Larry, just curious why you put the center small gauge lower than the other two.

Sal,
Hello there!!

The 3 small gauges actually are in a line, must be a camera thing.

The challenge was getting the 2 indicator lights horizontal. On an FFR, there is a 3/4" dash hoop in the way that we drilled in and put the light into. Amyway they came out good. I liked that better than slanted indicator lights.

Everything still works after 5 years and 19000 miles. Had to replace the clock once.

It is interesting what lengths we go to in some areas for "the aurhentic look" but in other area, we are not so focussed. For example, I spent a small fotune on real magnesium Halibrand rims, only to discover they are a maintenance pain. Now run chrome Trigos while the "authentic rims" sit in storage w track tires, used 1 or 2 times a year.

So life goes on.

Yes, you are right about the different details. For example, I chose to leave the Shelby gauges, Shelby pedals, and Shelby 427 S/C side badges on my car, instead of getting the 60s parts. The way I see it, since my car is a real Shelby, there are certain things about it that I wanted to leave as is, to keep some of it's modern pedigree intact.

But there's still stuff on my car I want to change. The full 4" sidepipes kill me everytime I look at the car, and I want to remove the carpeting from the trunk area that Billy at HRE did when he built the car. I also want to add in the FIA "bump" in the rear firewall, and get the correct belt harnesses. I can do all of this myself, it will just be some time before I have the money to do it. It's okay though, it's stuff to do as time goes on so I don't get bored!

...details are overrated.

 Looks like Kris got your number Ron.

OK, so details might well be 'overrated', but darn, it's a worthy goal to 'get in the ball park', at least. :D

Very, very nice Steve.
Thanks for posting.

Sal,

I looked clesely at my 3 small gauges...you are right, the center one is lower just s smidge. (drill bits!)
Would be a bit of a hassle to fix it at this point, though. let's keep it a secret.

Old age got me this time...dash layout of the twin Paxton car

This is about the twin Paxton blue Cobra that was sold at the Barrett Jackson auction in Phoenix awhile back. I drove all the way to Phoenix but even though I was there the day of the car's arrival, I missed Carroll Shelby driving the twin Paxton 427 in from Harley Cluxton's shop so didn't capture it on film outside. Since I don't use a flash i tried to capture on slow film* and bad light the dash but those pictures later turned out junk. Then I tried to write down the gauges in order on the right side but that's where my bad vision prevented it and I didn't want to climb in the what-would-sell-for-$5-million car.
Does anyone else know what the order is of the gauges on the right side?
Is the car displayed anywhere now that it has a new owner.....

*yeh, I now I should change to digital...
