Sc Dashboard Layout Confusion?
Well, the ago old question "where do the gauges and switches go"
The more pictures and dash layout plans I look at the more confused I get, and that brings me back to what Carroll Shelby was quoted as saying the layouts can be all different pending the tradesman of the day, well I know the models are different, but surely the manufacturer used some sort of template to save production time/costs! I have drawn up a cardboard template using the plan found of CC, http://www.clubphoto.com/_cgi-bin/ap...k_code=sa01_17 which has the switches 1.5" up from base line, and the two top toggle switches up about 2-5/8" which gives an equal distribution around the speedo, but I see on most SC Competition cars the upper 2 toggles are what I guess to be only 2" further up. Then I see on ERA cars the line of switches appears to be only about 1.25" up from baseline, and on it goes. What I am trying to achieve is the right look, and one of the first things that is wrong with a lot of replicas is the depth of the dash, and it quite noticeable, but I guess there is no right or wrong way. |

SC Dashboard Layout Confusion?
Ron,
Thank you for your post, and yes I wish to do it the right way, and have the office decorated and layed out properly! You have a PM. |
Ron,
Please, Master of all things Shelby, share, I would also like to know what is the correct configuration. (and how far off my POS is).:) |
What Brett said!

The link Ant posted has some usefulo info BUT alot of those dimensioned drawings are for brand "X" which is a different width. That changes dimensions in that direction alot. I am going through the same thing right now on the street dash layout. I have (of course) more info on the SC dash which is the one I'm not doing. The flat pattern dash is 10 5/16 tall in the centre. It should have a 3/4 deep lip on the bottom. On correct cars it will have a radius to match the tube it wraps around, not a press brake sharp corner. The toggle switches measure 2 3/8" from the bottom of a dash before forming (not bending ;-).

Ok...here are some details of the 427S/C dash layout.
This configuration is very likely the way that the cars left SAI. I say that because of two things:
First, the left side of the panel: http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/data/500/left-1.jpg Now, the center was designed for a race car...giving the 3 vital signs of health: oil pressure, water temp and revs. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...0/center-1.jpg Finally, the right side (center of the car)...there was nothing further right of this cluster on the S/C dash. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/data/500/right-1.jpg On some restored cars, you will see the 3 small gauges in a different order. On many cars, you might find an additional toggle switch, usually over the Dash dimmer rheostat, or to the right of the ignition switch, to control the cooling fans. I believe these were added after the fact. The original layout did not have a fan switch, but rather, used a temp sensor for that. This is what I believe to be the accurate detail.... as always, I am open to any new facts. :p |
Seems pretty logical.
Thanks Ron. |
Hey Ron good info thanks. Do you have any measurements?

Thanks Ron, nice! Jim

SC Dashboard Layout Confusion
Ron,
Well done with your very good input, its quite amazing what people do to dashboards, and these cars were race cars, and the heat of the moment anything could get modified!! My dash RAM SC, I would have to say is the most ugliest looking poorly thought out dash I have ever seen, I havent got a pict handy, but they had unfinished square dash ends, that sort of integrated with the doors, and were angled severely out at the bottom. I have cut all this out and remade it to look similar to a proper Cobra! I have looked at a lot of picts in the Gallery trying to also establish the approx dash angle, I assume it about 1 - 2 degrees in at the top, but I think as long as its not in at the bottom it will be okay, but I would appreciate any thoughts on that! |
Ended up w S/C layout:
http://www.primequip.net/images/65%2...sh%205-5-3.JPG Here are some close ups: http://www.primequip.net/images/65%2...%20Cluster.JPG http://www.primequip.net/images/65%2...iper-Panel.JPG http://www.primequip.net/images/65%2...Dash%20Key.JPG We used a volt meter instead of amps. Clock instead of oil temp. Fan toggle switch instead of auto sensor. (The extra one above the dash light knob, as seen on some CSX cars) Otherwise pretty close. Here are some CSX S/C dash boards: CSX-3016 http://www.primequip.net/images/65%2...016%20dash.jpg CSX-3057 http://www.primequip.net/images/65%2...057%20dash.jpg CSX-3294 http://www.primequip.net/images/65%2...294%20dash.jpg |
Couple points here... 3016 had been restored. 3057 is not an original car. And 3294 is a converted street car. So none of those are really good cars to use for accuracy.

Sal,
Do you have 427 S/C dash images to share of "really good cars to use for accuracy"? Larry |

Peter at ERA provided me with information on the S/C dash when I converted my street dash.
