Original Dash Material
Anyone know what material was used on the original Cobra dashes? Where can I get some?
Thanks, Paul |
2498 has leather I thought they used naugahyde but was recently educated.

I think leather was a 289 thing as the seats were as well in the earlier cars. The 427's went to Naugahyde to my knowledge.
I wonder how many Nauga's had to be killed to make an interior? |
I believe all of the variants used leather for the dash and also for the glove box door when the car had a glove box. However, for some reason AC used Rexine on the back of the glove box door. Maybe to save a couple of pennies per car?

I've got some closeups of an original 427 dash and surface looks very much like the top material, not leather.

Leather was used on the 260 and 289 Cobras. Vinyl is the material used on 427 dashes. I don't know of a source for original type vinyl, but some of the restoration shops may carry it. Jim

As Nick said, I have been educated.

Just bumping this thread again....
so, vynil was used on the 427 S/C dash, but noones able to point to the spec of the original vynil or is it naugahyde ? - i dont know the difference, not common in the UK, i think, unless its got a different name. Anyone know whether the 427 cars carried a pocket for the side curtains across the rear cockpit bulkhead, like the 289 cars? I think 289 original cars also had vynil across the rear of the cockpit (according to the Rinsey Mills book), but im not cear about the finsh on the 427 cars (vynil/leather/carpet/naugahyde). cheers, Kevin |

Kevin,
Vinyl and Naugahyde are essentially the same. Naugahyde is a trade name for a particular brand of vinyl covered fabric. They come in a wide variety of surface finishes. So I would send the picture strictlypersonl provided to Naugahyde and see if they can match it. http://www.naugahyde.com/ |
I was told that 427 street cars had leather for seats and carpet on the rear bulkhead. Comp and S/C's used Naugahyde for seats and rear bulkhead. Don't know if that's 100% correct or not though.

I believe the rear panel on all original Cobras was vinyl. The pockets for the plexiglas side curtains was a vinyl material with elastic sewn in the top edge. Many have been replaced with leather pockets. Most of the pockets were black vinyl but some of the early cars with red interiors had red vinyl pockets (i.e. CSX 2149). I have the original pocket from that car as well as the original black vinyl pocket for CSX 2401.
The covering over the rear fender wells in the interior was leather on the original cars that I have inspected closely. (I need to look at CSX 3288 more closely to see if those pieces are leather, but on the 289's they were leather). COX 6126 had original naugahyde tan seats and a tan naugahyde pocket, the only one like that that I am aware of. |
many thans for great info.
Jim, I am intrigued about the wheels fenders issue - had assumed this was carpet. Look forward to anything esle that can be posted on this. |

Look close. I believe you will find that the binding used to make the side edges strong is fine quality very thin split leather. Dan http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...64/Binding.jpg |

I did not have the benefit of the detailed pic strictlypersonl posted in #5 above when I went ot the vinyl shop here in Houston, so the material I used to recover my Hurricane dash and cover the bulkhead is slightly different. But I am 100% sure that guy had that exact print in his sample book. I suggest you find a shop that's been in business a few years with the various sample books and with that picture, you'll be able to find a vendor with a perfect match.

Still having trouble locating a match for this stuff in the UK. Got a few samples, but none seem exactly right.
Anyway, I thought it might help anyone in similar situation to post another original pic. This is a zoom in from an original 427 dash from the out of print Rinsey Mills book. |
Would anyone be able to tell me if this is the correct vynil for the dash:

Original Dash Material
Did anyone ever find the correct answer and/or source for the dash material?
Thanks |
not much help but....
I eventually happnened to come across an offcut vynil roll at a kit car show that seemed to have the right sort of texture.
On closer inspection I think the 'grain' is a little shallower than it should be, but in the end, I reckoned I was starting to stray into the area of compulsive obsessive disorder. %/%/**) I had a large whisky and decided to forget about it. (but that didnt stop me making an ali rear bulkhead and making moulds for the inner fenders and then covering these in my newly acquired vynil. once a pedant, always a pedant). |
