Will there be a split on which Cobras race at which Calif. event?
The Monterey Historics is steaming along withoutthe founder Steve Earle, now being run by SCRAMP, who run Laguna Seca racetrack, and will be held the usual weekend that the Pebble Beach and Concorso Italiano are held in August.

But Earle recently sent out press releases on his event in Sonoma, closer to San Francisco, which will be in June. Official name is the Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival, scheduled for June 5-6, 2010, at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA.

I just wonder whether some racers will stick with the tried and true Monterey event or race instead at Earle's new event? Or will they take their cars to both?

I have the same question about all the vendors that were on the midway at the Monterey Historics. Will they have booths at both events?

Also I haven't been to the Sonoma event so I wonder if they have a theme car/marque? If not, the name change (used to be the Wine Country Classic) leaves the door open for a theme car to be picked for future Sonoma Historics. Let's lean on Mr. Earle to pick Shelby American, which was the featured marque at Monterey some time ago so we can see lots of original era Shelby-American cars racing. Earle's contact info is:

Steve Earle will still be involved in in the Monterey Historics for the 2010 event. The old Wine Country Classic was traditionally held at the end of May and many of the same cars could be seen at both the Sonoma and Monterey events.
I'm kind of disappointed to see the Wine Country Classic go, since they had all of the great cars with much smaller crowds.

It'll be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Doug, it's my understanding that he won't be involved. SCRAMP gets to use the name "Monterey Historics" once this year and then it will change.

That could have changed.

So Iam reading the rules, and I have always wanted to ask - can a kit car or replica enter in the historics race? Or does everything have to be the real deal? |

For Monterey and Sonoma, I'm pretty certain it's by invitation only.

BTW - Not sure why the link isn't working, but it works if you copy and paste it in your browser.

The Coronado Speedfest is a sister event to Monterey and the 2009 event was smaller than in past years. Only a couple of Cobras there. I was told it was because the leadership had changed but that in 2110, it would be the same as the past years.Larry

Replicas be allowed? That's what I forgot to ask
I think Steve Earle was pretty adament about not letting replicas run in Monterey when it was "his" event but now that he's not running Monterey anymore maybe the new stewards will have a more flexible attitude for 2010. For instance, I'd like to see a Daytona coupe rebodied over a genuine 289 Cobra be allowed to run, McCluskey has built several. And then there's the Victor Gauntlett sanctioned trio of "new/old" Aston Martin DB4GTZ Zagato coupes , the recently built Eric Broadley-sanctioned Lola T-70 coupes , and the recently built Jim Hall-sanctioned Chaparrals, all built exactly like the orginals by the original makers--I appreciate the original automakers bringing them back but where do you run them if you can't run them at a historic race?
On the other hand I once went to the Chicago Historics decades ago when Joe Marchetti was running them and was told half the cars leading the race were replicas. So I'd be curious to know where the new people in charge at Monterey are going to be different vis-a-vis replicas than Earle was (is).
