Here's  a list of things that I have when I do this. 
Flashlight
highlighters  and pens
clip  board 
snacks:  redvines, beef  jerky and powerbars (I like the ZONE ones) 
cooler with  soda and water 
two  different  wieght jackets, never know what the weather will bring. 
charged  cell phone or two yes there  will be a number to call just in case. 
work gloves  just in case you have to change a flat 
A  working spare tire or fix a flat. 
lipbalm and  sunscreen 
compass  (just  in case/but you don't need one for the novice/beginner class) 
sunglasses 
gas  cards and  money
Headache  medicine  and Dramamine !!! for  you and  your co-pilot if so needed. 
A  Watch or two or three
a  ruler 
calculator 
a  sense of adventure 
a  willingness to drive, a lot! on some of SoCals best roads 
Driver's  License  for the Driver and Navigator, Proof of BOTH Insurance and  Registration.

The ones in bold I consider essential.  [I hope they came out in bold]
It's  important to bring a watch where  you can set the seconds manually.  Please don't use a stopwatch, those are  useless. Also, if you have  never done anything like this before, please come to  the orientation  class on time and ask lots of questions. We will be there to  answer  them all and to make sure you have a great time at this.
