NY Purchase out of state Cobra

It seems from the postings that there is alot of red tape trying to register a Cobra in New York. Is this just for cars just being registered? If I am looking to buy an out of state cobra, titled and registered as a 1965, can I just go to DMV and register it like any other used car?

Thank you in advance for your insight and advice.:)

You can try registering it with the out of state registration/title and the Bill of Sale. I think (hope) you won't have a problem. Otherwise, the inspection/re-vin number assignment and re-registration process isn't too difficult. However, you will lose the vintage year registration and will probably be classified as a '-- Custom (based on year of build).

Good Luck!

You should be OK, if your insurance card matches what the out of state title says exactly with regard to VIN, Model, Make, etc. Just go in and say you want to register an out of state car.

Make sure that your insurance company knows that it is a replica (NEVER say KIT CAR to them or DMV) of a 1965 Cobra (unless you are lucky enough to be getting an Original 1965 Shelby-made Cobra). If you ever have a claim, they could use that nasty word "fraud" and deny you your money. Same thing goes, if you ever sell it. Be honest with the buyer.

Good luck!
Dave

If the car is already titled, then it should be a straight forward swap of the cars title for a transferable NY registration.

Revisiting this.Would a title that reads: 1965 "superformance "as a make raise any red flags?

ROUSHAC 03-09-2007 06:46 PM

Can't say for sure, but you should be OK. Just make sure that EVERYTHING reads the same on the insurance cards and out of state title.

eric johnson 03-10-2007 12:05 PM

I found out the title says "ASSEMBLED" under manufacturer and "COBRA" as the model. The year is 1965. Also it says "REBUILT SALVAGE" on it even though a crate motor was used. The second owner does not have the original certificate of origin or any of the receipts for the engine or transmission.Looks like this car could be a nightmare to try to get through. It is a Superformance series 700.Any thoughts?

ROUSHAC 03-10-2007 02:37 PM

Eric,

It's a transfer of title of an already legally titled out of state vehicle. It should be a simple matter, and NY is far better than California, for instance, in these matters. Checking with your local DMV would be your best bet.

Good luck!

Cheers!

Thanks Dave,

I'll check with with a contact I have in Albany that "JCOOP" (clubcobra member) gave me on monday.I'm afraid he's going to say it can't be titled as a 65 and will have to go through the 4 step process which will need the engine receipts ,etc...but I will find out.

Thank you again. This is a great site.Much helpful advice from members.

Just a note about the "branded" title, since it states "rebuilt salvage", it may be required to pass a stand alone "safety inspection" at a state run testing facility. I'd question the current owner on the title status as that alone would knock 20-30% of the real world value off the car. Was the car in an accident, flood, Katrina??????? If so, do you really want it at the price you are paying?

The car is currently being offered by a reputable dealer. The title is from Ohio.It is a Superformance cobra.Maybe "rebuilt salvage" being on the title is part of the state procedure.I will find out what I can. There are alot of cobras out there if this doesn't pan out.

Thanks!

ny registation

if it is salvage or rebuilt , it will have to go to ny state dmv inspection station. you have to pay about 110. and set up appointment 2 or 3 month?? that what i had to do 3 years ago with one form nc with rebuilt title.

I don't know if this has anything at all to do with the topic, but just for informational purposes, I just purchased a Cobra this year from an owner in NY. I'm in NY as well. He had it titled in NY as a "1984 Homebuilt". I retitled it the same way, but haven't registered it yet. I have no idea if this "homebuilt" title is good or bad, I guess I'll find out next year when registration time comes. Just thought I'd throw it out there as another possible option.

Regardless of the actual seller, once the title is branded with the word "salvage" it's value is diminished. I suggest if the deal is too good to be true to walk away from it. If you are paying market value or close to market value, move on to another prospective car. "SALVAGE" means that it was wrecked some time in it's past and the insurance company paid it off, then sold it at a salvage auction to the highest bidder. After that, the buyer fixed it, or attempted to fix it and is now trying to sell it off for a profit. It's your money, and you will be the one driving it, now that you have full disclosure from someone without a financial interest in it the choices is yours to make.

Again I do hope you find these posts helpful.

When I bought and repaired a 'totaled' Dodge from an insurance company the car had to have a special inspection by a State certified specialist in order to relicense it. Guess who those 'specialists' work for? BODY SHOPS! Unless THAT body shop did the repair they would not inspect the car.

Well I finally found someone but it was like digging through a trash can to dredge him up and it COST me plenty for him to 'kick the tires' and thats about ALL he did! Having a total 'inspected' by such a certified inspector is certainly no gaurentee the car is 'right'.

...all though my Dodge was retored nicley and done right (I made a killing on the resale even with the reduced "Salvage Title" value). :D

I decided to pass on the car. Thanks to all for the advice given.I'll keep looking!

Do I have this right?
If you buy a cobra that is titled as a 1965 Ford or 1965 Superformance or 1965 Custom you should be fine titling it in NYS as long as the the previous title is valid and the title and insurance card match. Since most states now require the car to be titled the year built most of those available are 2001, 2002 or something more recent. For NYS how does the emmissions testing work on these? If it is titled as a 200x custom are those exempt? I cannot imagine that the way most these cars are set up would ever pass emmissions.

thanks!!

ccwest5,

I'm not positive, but I believe Upstate and Downstate may have different requirements. Again, it would probably be best to talk to NY DMV to get an accurate answer.

Hopefully, mrmustang will chime in again. He probably knows more about this stuff than a lot of us combined do.

Good luck!

Cheers!
Dave

Dave, I think you are correct with the upstate/downstate issue. I was raised in Syracuse many moons ago, it is amazing when I go back to visit how much has changed.

I also agree with your comment on MrMustang, any member who has been reading the posts on this site would be impressed not only by his knowledge but his willingness to help other members.

I garage is nearing completion and Iam getting ready to make the jump, however, I am still nervouse that I will buy something then have countless headaches making the thing legal.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

mrmustang 03-16-2007 06:41 AM

No need to attempt a stroking of my ego to get me to assist. If the car is titled as a "1965" then NYS will treat it as such. If it's titled as a "2004", again NYS will treat it as such but emissions will be based on the year of the block used. Only real issues are if like the original poster of this thread, you car has a titled marked as "salvage", in which case the NYS DMV will want to inspect the car with a fine tooth comb.
